I don't Criterion titles will go that low, but I thought $12.99 for 400 Blows was a pretty good price so I blind bought it today.

Criterion's costs for producing Blu-rays and doing restorations are not that far removed from the major Hollywood studios. The difference is that Criterion titles are of limited appeal and sales potential, resulting in lower overall volume. So the fixed costs are basically the same, but Criterion needs to charge each customer more since they sell fewer units.

I think the $19.99 price was/is more than fair for ITROTS. When compared with Empire of Passion which was released the same day but only on DVD you can clearly see how much older films can benefit from the blu treatment and how much care went into ITROTS encode.

7.99 for a criterion release? 19.99 is a good price and you should pretty much get them any where below $20 as it doesnt happen often. buy it if you want it but dont wait around if you think its going to go for that price new on amazon or anything

Blu-ray Duke

The movie is base on the real story of Sada Abe, a "cause celebre" in Japan.
Personaly I wasn't taken in by this movie. There is too much sex scene in the movie that is actualy needed to move the story along. It's almost like finding justification for making a porno hidden behind art IMO. I am not sure if buying it is a safe thing if you never seen it but then again it's not a movie one can find that easy as a rental. |

![]() Quote:
Oshima liked to shock in his films (see Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence for another outrageous example, but not pornographic). I don't know enough about him to say if his films had meaning beyond immediate shock value. I thought Merry Christmas was very emotional and portrayed the contradictory feelings between Japan and the West during WWII, but I really don't understand In the Realm. Doug |
