Reds (1981) - November 30, 2021 - Blu-ray Forum

Looks like Paramount will be doing a new release of Reds (1981) for its 40th anniversary. According to Media Play News, the new release is apparently sourced from a new 4K restoration supervised by Beatty.

Man, this is long overdue for a new transfer. I have the original release and it's MPEG-2, if I remember correctly.

Same here..and I was this close to springing for the current release about a week ago. Hope they give this the white gloves treatment it deserves..great freaking movie.

Cover looks pretty solid. Surprised that Paramount is not placing this in their Presents line, but still hoping for a new transfer at least (if not a full-blown restoration).

Dare I bite? I watched the old Blu-ray several years ago and even then I thought it showed its age. But I'd feel like a sucker if I double-dipped only for them to announce a UHD later.

Edit: I'm assuming this will be a new scan.

This has been stuck in lesser editions and OOP for too long. Let's hope it's a new transfer but more likely it will just get the old BD back in print.

The AU edition was AVC and DDTrueHD.

According to Media Play News, Reds and Heaven Can Wait are brand new restorations. This is the money quote about Reds:

Paramount will release the film in a two-disc Blu-ray set, newly restored under Beatty’s supervision. The film was restored and remastered from the original negative in 4K with High Dynamic Range using a vintage print from the Paramount archives as a reference, which was approved by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro.

If they are right, forget being baffled these aren’t 4k discs. I’m surprised they are not even Paramount Presents titles.

Reds should be 4k though. It would look impressive.

That is a real head-scratcher. Seemed primed for a Presents release at the very least. Still great news that it is indeed a new restoration though.

Sweet. While the old master isn't the worst thing out there, it was a really early Blu-ray and needed some work. Will be buying this for sure.
