Hi Everyone...thanks for everyone helping me with my questions about the purchase of the ps3. I finally did it today and bought the 40GB. I have one major question though.
My TV only maxes out at 1080I and when I set up the ps3 it said do you want the default settings at 1080i and i of course said yes. I put on Spidey 3 and there are the black bars on the top and bottom that I am used too with standard DVD. Is that normal is that because of my 1080I? Is it possible to get full screen? I wonder if it will make the picture less appealing if it stretches. Thanks |

It's not the 1080I that's the problem, it's the aspect ratio of the movie versus what the TV is set to. Blu Ray's & HD DVD's are just like standard DVD's when it comes to the aspect ratio. some of mt Blu ray's have the bars and some don't. I notice that thse with a 1:85 aspect ratio don't have have the borders.

Yes it's normal, it's called aspect ratio. Some movies are formatted 1.78:1 (16x9) and some are 2.35:1 (like Spidey 3, an extra wide format). You can find dozens of threads about this in the forums.
Aspect ratio is a choice of the movie maker. If you watch movies in theaters, pay attention to the sides of the screen. A 16x9 movie won't extend to the very edges. A 2.35:1 movie will. Black bars will be around for awhile unless they make 2.4:1 ratio TV's. Last edited by mastertang; 01-21-2008 at 11:32 PM. |

Congratulations on your purchase, as have have bought one of the most future-proof players on the market! The black bars are because of the aspect ratio on the BD, not because of your TV! Just like DVD, some disks will have black bars and some wont. Welcome to blu-ray!

Just look at the aspect ratio on the case, 1.85:1 should be full screen or close to it, 1.78:1 is full screen on a 16:9 screen and 2.35:1 or similar will have to have bars on it otherwise you'd cut off portions of the movie.

Lots of comedies are. Superbad comes to mind. Anything by Guillermo Del Toro(Hellboy and Pans Labyrinth) Bram Stokers Dracula, Hollow Man, Goodfellas, Spiderman, The Devils Rejects. Just look for that 1:85:1 and you'll find full screen but by no means limit yourself just because of the black bars. Every movie looks ridiculously good in blu =]

I thought i'd jump on this thread with my own question regarding 1:85:1. Sorry if this is already explained somewhere else but i have been researching and searching multiple forums but can't find an answer for this.
I have a PS3 outputting via HDMI to my 1080p tv(37in). I have two Blu-ray movies 'Pirates 3' which according to the case is 1.85:1 and 'The Rock' which according to the case is 2.35:1. When played both movies have black bars on my TV (which appear excactly the same size), however both look correct with regards to the aspect ratio (i.e. not stretched or flattened). Plus the PS output is 16:9 (i.e. display info appears within black bar area). I'm totally new to most of this but it looks to me like the aspect ratio reported on the Prirates 3 case is incorrect and its actually 2.35:1. If it is, then fine. However, if it is actually 1:85:1 then what i need to find out is why it displays with such large black bars on my TV (through PS3). Any ideas? |

I think that you're correct. I vaguely remember something about POTC having the wrong aspect ratio mis-printed on the case, and it's actually 2.35:1

Yep you're right, I've now found a few other threads regarding this misprint:
