I don't get the concept, they seem bad enough to use at all, but for hd?.How do you experience hd sound when you have no idea what ppl are saying or doing and just reading from the screen, or just listening to a voice over.Seems if you can understand things even moderatly, I don't see how great they are.

but the same could be said for people that dont use hdmi for their audio. different strokes for different folks.

I personally like them (subtitles) for British, Australian and New Zealand movies. I always have subtitles on when available, though, because my wife will drive me absolutely insane making be replay and replay the same scene over and over and over, if she can't make out every single word. After her chronic tardiness, it's her worst feature.

Because human emotion is human emotion, there is inflection, character moments that are in the dialog no matter what language you speak, moments the bargain basement voiceover guy they use will be unable to capture.

That's why the US Pan's Labyrinth isn't soiled with a dub, because Del Toro specifically forbade it. He even translated the subtitles himself to make sure his desired meaning got across.

Once you watch subtitled movies for a while, you'll read them so quickly it's like they're not even there

I always watch a movie with the original language. It matches the actors' mouths and the emotion is just more authentic. I don't mind reading subtitles, it's the whole reaosn why I learned to read in the first place.

I love subtitles... I watch a lot of foreign movies, so I ended up getting used to having them on and always turn them on out of habit.

I can't stand dubbing, however.

Agree 100%.
I love Japanese movies, live action and also anime and it is always subs with no hesitation.
Anything else is unacceptable.
Movies like Pan's Labyrinth was better oddly enough because of the language.

I've never been a fan of dubs.

But in the past few years I have enjoyed the English dub tracks on the Disney-released Studio Ghibli films. Tekkonkinkreet also has an English dub track which seems to me to have have been executed with a higher-than-average degree of sensitivity and effort. To rip off George Carlin: "There's no blue food...one out of every 200 pieces of hard candy are blue, it's a pain in the ass, you have to explain them away..."

I might well feel differently if I understood Japanese. My Spanish is pretty bad, but that's exactly why I'd never listen to an English dub of a Spanish-language film.
