nay sony,
nay yamaha, yay-ish onkyo, yay-er pioneer, yay-ist denon. long story short .... my vote goes denon. ive got the 3808 running a bunch of def tech mythos and this thing sounds gooooooooooooood. i think you get better features with the denon than the pioneer. as far as sq goes, its your ear against mine against everyone else. |

My vote is a toss up between the Onkyo and the Yamaha.
I own an Onkyo 805 and love it. I used to own a pre-HD Yamaha system and loved it. I've also heard a Yamaha HD unit (don't know the model number, sorry) in action within a properly constructed dedicated home theatre room and I loved it. |

I own the ES5300 and I'm super impressed. The AQ is amazing and the 6 HDMI + 3 Comp connections are already starting to fill up.

I see you are interested in a few great looking and sounding receivers.
SONY: I wouldn't buy it at half the retail price. I wouldn't buy it for lets say even 800$. Sony receivers are one of the most overpriced, over rated RMS powers, With the highest THD (distortion) and just basically overall a piece of junk. In my opinion that is. I was in the exact same spot with the same exact choices about 6 months ago. After many many many reviews ,user opinions, and actual "BENCH TEST" results for each unit. The only unit that was actually capable of the rated 7 channel @RMS POWER WAS THE ONKYO 875. All other units were below the rated power they claim. I dont know if this is a big thing for you but for me when the first thing they claim is actually a well embellished kind of lie, it makes me think less of the company. I ended up buying the ONKYO in the beginning I was very unhappy with my purchase as there were many problems the unit had that pissed me off. But after I got an exchange from ONKYO the newer unit had a newer FIRMWARE VERSION and had all issues I had with the unit previously, WERE ALL FIXED!! The ONKYO also has the REON HQV VIDEO SCALER UPTO 1080P with full control over the CONTRAST,HUE,SATURATION, AND BRIGHTNESS. ALSO HAVING MOSQUITO NR, RANDOM NR , BLOCK NOISE (ALL HAVE LOW,MID,HIGH AND OFF)WITH ADDED BONUS' OF EDGE ENHANCEMENT (LOW,MID,HIGH,OFF) AND PICTURE MODE (AUTO,FILM,VIDEO) From all my reading and such on the comparable models I would go with the 875. Followed by the YAMAHA/DENON. I hope this has helped you out a bit. |

Onkyo's receivers are the hottest receivers right now. reasonably priced and packed with features. They won a bunch of receiver of the year awards in europe and u.s. reviews are pretty much in agreement. The only thing i have against Onkyo is that the receiver gets extremely hot!!! surprisingly, it's not the amp but the Reon video processor that's generating the heat. My Denon DVD player with the similar Realta processor also gets super hot.
I used to buy Sony ES models but have been disappointed with their sound. With all channels humming, the power drops considerably. I also have a Denon 3806 receiver, but imho the Onkyo is a lot better. |

Nothing can beat onkyos features+quality/price ratio! Last week there was a deal on amazon $1050 SR875 delivered.
Denon is good machine but damn overpriced. And lacks key features onkyo has.The only Denon to respect 5308ci(Realta, highly upgradable, wifi, usb, etc),but still damn expensive. my 2 cents. ![]() |

I have the Denon 3808ci and love it. I highly recommend it. Lots of power for even my not very efficient B&W speakers. I find the Pioneers to over over emphases the highs. If you have a metal style driver in your tweeter you will get an over abundance of highs. Yes the Denon is more expensive but if you need lots of extra power you can't go wrong. There are others aspects that put it above the others but want to keep it short.

There is nothing wrong with any of those receivers mentioned in the reviews INCLUDING the Sony 5300ES. In fact it comes with a 5 year warranty.
You won't go wrong with any of these. What you need to do is ask yourself what you actually need/want in a receiver.....then read professional reviews as posted in this thread. Compare the receivers side by side including what they offer and price. You will find that you will come to that receiver that makes you happy. Last edited by cawgijoe; 02-02-2008 at 01:29 AM. |

im biased towards the denon the same way crackinhedz is biased towards pioneer elite i think. haha
ive always been a denon fan. i think the differences between the 3808 and 4308 are nowhere close to being worth the 900$ some price jump. therefore, with the quality and power you get with the 3808 at its price is more than enough for me to call a bargain ![]() |

I always like Yamaha because of the performance in audio and video. I have changed the RX-V2500 to the 3800 in November and really pleased with it. The reason I changed to 3800 is because of HDMI inputs.

YEAH,thats the point! All above mentioned AVRs have almost SAME spec.Well Denon bit better built,Sony has 6 hdmi,Yama n Pio got same spec. They MUST cost as much as SR805 do,but not damn $500-700 more!EVEN Maranz 7002 got same spec($1500).AND ALL OF THEM (exept SR875)got crappy DCDi scaler (read review-it fails most SilikonOptix tests)!
So... WHY PAY MORE? |
