I have Caligula preordered from Amazon. I have never seen this. Post your thoughts about this movie. I value everyone's thoughts about this movie.

I think it's a risky blind-buy to say the least....... and I own it on DVD.....

This movie is not for everyone, and even I have to struggle to justify it as "art"

Ya...it's just one of those movies. You either hate it or love it. I never got a chance to get the imperial dvd set so I'll be able to take advantage of the exras this time around. Hopefully in HD.

It started as a notable book by Vidal, pitched to the A-list British actors as an epic movie, then shot and edited with an epic and hardcore movie mindset. I think there were two kinds of shoots on the set: real actors and porn actors.

You can imagine how the censored version looks like because it resembles an actual film. The uncensored ads all the hardcore porn scenes which makes the total a bizarre film. It is rather strange and not something for repeat viewing, unless you only watch the porn bits; they were just bits because the action was hardcore but the scene doesn't last 20 minutes per action.

Shortbus has a similar hardcore scenes but its main emphasis is the story. It works a hundred times better than Caligula.

I haven't seen all the various versions but I thought it was pretty much of a mess of a movie. I have heard the actors also talk about it and they really have not had anything positive to say either. Maybe only Gore Vidal managed to get his name removed from the credits.

Just my opinion, it was something I watched once but never had any desire to see again. Not cause it was shocking or anything, just cause I thought it was really bad. But this might be one that will be hard to find to rent if it is the uncut version so if you really do want to see it you might have to buy it.
