Default Caligula?

I was at a music/video store yesterday and saw that Caligula was released as a 3 disc set and I know I have heard that there was talk about it being release on Blu-ray but can someone tell me what it means when it said on the back of the box 'bolder and more revealing Caligula than ever before, with a beautiful new high-definition transfer from recently uncovered negative elements' .

The new DBZ boxed sets say remastered in hi-def, but they are on DVDs as well. Why would they write that when DVDs only have a resolution of 480p?

I just seen Caligula (dvd) at wal-mart. I was like WTF, they sell x-rated moveis at wal-mart now? After flipping out for a minute, I seen a sticker that read r-rated version...that must of required alot of editing!

Have to pass on this one. Saw it the theater back in the day and for me personally, this only is a good movie to cringe to. Not the best for re-watchability. Other than the shock value, I felt there was really nothing more to this film than a gross out session. You might want to rent it first before purchase just to test the waters on this title if you have not seen it yet.

I agree with Marcus'... that is one sick puppy of a film. Made for shock value and it worked... it bombed in theaters, critics hated it... porn collectors liked it fine though.

Question: Does porn even count if its in 480p? Is it still XXX porn or is it soft porn?

well if it's an NTSC DVD coded for 16:9 display, with a 1.85 movie, it's more like 440i

I am big Roman history buff and i remember the day i rented Caligula and was very shocked to discover it was made by penthouse. although i didnt care for it being porn, its a good movie based on history of Roman emperors. Too bad the dvd did not have subtitle and i was hoping that movie will be transfered into Blu ray. Was there any talk for Caligula to be on BD? if so where can i get the info?

Default caligua review

that is a horrible movie. I would not watch it around children. I seen both the r-rated and x-rated versions, and the x-rated version is the worst. If you are into that sort of thing so be it. I had it on video tape for years and finally threw it out.

GOOD LUCK!

The previous US dvd of Caligula was letterboxed, not even anamorphic, and was pretty poor quality. Uncut though. If they have gone back to a negative element, and remastered it using only hidef tape, then it should be pretty good (for an admitedly ugly looking film). They can say "remastered in hi-definition" regardless of what format they then release i on. It could be Super-8, or VHS, it was still remastered in hi-def.

The 156 min movie was cut by about 14 mins for a UK cinema release in the early 80's, but the only home video release has been the US R rated version, which lopped off another 50 !! mins and is worthless.

Looking forward to seeing this 'Blu-movie', if you will, in 1080p! Uncut, it's rather unique.

Cheers.

Who have or seen the recent release (rated R) caligula dvd? if so, did it have subtitles? it didnt label on the cover of DVD.. I knew the recent release would cut those porn scene. Of course i wouldnt watch it around my kids too! But, i would let them watch other roman movies though!

because they were actually remastered too. and they probably have more definition than they did before (the transfers, not the 'film' or whatever it was originally recorded in)

but yeah, using the words "high definition" on a standard def DVD pretty much leads to confusion
