Best I've seen in 2018. Probably most of 2017 too, if it counted. I'd consider pre-ordering this, which is rare for new theatrical releases. I tend to wait 'til they're cheap.
PS: Amazing to think Jonny Greenwood has done two undeniably original scores for films this year, and yet both are very different (and obviously for very different films). I've not seen Phantom Thread yet though (shame on me). |

Looking forward to this, wanted to support it on the big screen but didn't get a chance. I wonder what are the chances of getting BDs of Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar? I seem to remember Criterion released the former on DVD, time for an upgrade?

Anyway, they didn't release other recent films of a similar calibre - Free Fire, The Lost City of Z, Manchester by the Sea, Silence, Hell or High Water - on UHD so this is unlikely to be any different. Or at least I'd be surprised if it was. |

As for YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE, I finally got to see it over the weekend. It’s another masterpiece for her. I can’t stop thinking about the audacious final scene. Best ending to a movie since, well, MORVERN CALLAR. |

Not to go off on a SJW tangent, but in general critics have been tougher on Ramsay than her male counterparts. Several prominent critics have slagged off her work as self-indulgent or pretentious while praising the Anderson boys, whose lesser works seem far more precious to me. That BLOCKERS and A QUIET PLACE got higher Tomato ratings than YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE on opening weekend is a sad state of affairs for film criticism. I wouldn’t expect everyone to love Ramsay’s latest (the old couple sitting behind me stomped out noisily before it was over), but too many supposedly “top” critics have complained it’s an empty exercise in style. This despite profound themes of grief, hope and redemption — and humor — rising from the bloody carnage. I knew it was great filmmaking while watching it, but it only took a good night’s sleep to realize it will be considered a classic someday. It’s that original and that good. And again, that ending is a corker. |

I saw this last night and I really liked it a lot! Dark, disturbing and extremely funny in the most unexpected of ways. The scene with Joe and the other guy lying on the kitchen floor singing I've Never Been To Me made me laugh out loud.
Another fantastic score by Jonny Greenwood too, very reminiscent of Drive in the early scenes. I think she missed a trick by not including this track somewhere in the film though. ![]() |

Agreed on all fronts. I loved it whilst watching it, but after a bit of a think I loved it even more. The only perfect film I've seen so far this year (Phantom Thread is good, but not Anderson's best; I've yet to see Isle of Dogs, but am looking forward to it).

This really needs an upgrade, there's something very wrong with the audio on the Amazon version. Sounds somehow hollow and there's this awful reverb on all the background noises. |

Although it’s not TECHNICALLY the last scene (how could I forget the rave coda?), that final conversation confirms Morvern and Lanna’s friendship is at an impasse. Lanna babbles about her newest boyfriend, Morvern invites her to keep traveling with her, Lanna tells her to grow up, Morvern excuses herself and splits. Basically it’s Morvern’s last chance to confide in a friend and she realizes it’s impossible. |

So you could hear the dialogue? I streamed it about a month ago and all you could hear was the ambient track. The rest of the movie, the dialogue levels were adequate.
Drives me crazy when stuff like that happens. When Claire Denis’s “Bastards” debuted on Netflix, they substituted the sound FX closed captions for English subtitles. And didn’t fix it for 6 months. The only translation provided was [FOOTSTEPS], [MUSIC BEGINS] and [DOORBELL RINGS]. When I finally got through to a real person at Netflix, he told me I must be mistaken because Netflix didn’t show foreign language films. (!) Then, half a year later, voila. The subtitles finally showed up. |

Living in Finland where everything is subtitled Netflix and other streaming services are famous for their really bad translations. I have a few friends who translate movies and tv shows for a living and they refuse to work for Netflix 'cause the company pays next to nothing. Same with all the professional translators. The result: Netflix got busted maybe seven years ago using Finnish subs that originated from torrent sites! |
