The National Geographic documentary DeepSea Challenge 3D, which chronicles James Cameron's diving expeditions in the Mariana Trench, will be released on Blu-ray 3D on November 11th. A 2D and DVD copy appear to be included as well.

I agree that the release of a Blu version of THE ABYSS seems to be the one challenge that Cameron can't achieve.

Lol. All anybody wants is The Abyss, not another documentary. He really does need to focus on The Abyss and leave his diving home movies to the Discovery Channel.

Well, there's already a date of Nov. 11th for the 3-D film. They could have announced THE ABYSS for Blu-ray as well, but they didn't.
At this point, a Blu of THE ABYSS seems to be a dead duck. |

Finally got to this (thanks, 3D-BlurayRental.com).
I enjoyed the insights into JC's personal passions going all the way back to his childhood. Ironically awful that, what with all the focus on the dangers of JC's solo dive, it was co-director/producer/writer Andrew Wight who was one of two on this show who died in an chopper crash during production. Also ironic that a year after this show, another JC associate died in an aircraft crash (James Horner). And then Paxton died in 2017. The project brought to mind how some filmmakers I enjoy have all returned to or stayed with childhood passions as adults: Spielberg has stayed with movies after various corporate machinations (after shooting 8mm movies as a kid in his backyard); Michael Bay is still blowing stuff up (after shooting movies of blowing up his train set as a kid); Oliver Stone has returned to even rawer political engagement, sitting down with Putin (after powerful adolescent experiences upon choosing infantry in Vietnam despite being a privileged NY son of a Republican stockbroker father); and JC has returned to his first passion of exploration not filmmaking (after dreaming of ocean dives and playing in a pretend submersible cardboard box as a kid). Which brings me to the predictable, tired mentions of the absence of The Abyss on BD in this thread. The man clearly has other, MAJOR things on his mind and heart. He personally helped finance his becoming only the third human being ever to dive to the deepest place on the planet. I found it revealing that wife Suzy (Amis) in the picture mentions that JC has had a difficult reconciliation of whether he wants to continue even making films or pursue his bigger passion, exploring. I think maybe he hedged his bets, saying he's now only in the Avatar business (as far as filmmaking is concerned). In any event, I think it's obvious that BD releases of past work are not a priority for the man regardless of how loud the whining and gnashing of teeth becomes in that other thread of six years, 214 pages and counting. If something new fires his passion to re-visit it, such as a 3D conversion, perhaps it will happen. Otherwise, it's like asking Elon Musk why he's not just focused on making cars . . . instead of launching SpaceX rockets. The man has, to quote a Rush song, "Grand[er] Designs." I also found it interesting that Fox apparently had absolutely nothing to do with this BD release. No Disney (Ghosts Of the Abyss) either. Everybody from DisruptiveLA (never heard of them) and other boutiques to Rolex to National Geographic. But no Fox. Millenium Entertainment? Really? Last edited by Paul.R.S; 02-14-2018 at 06:13 AM. |

Exactly, Todd.
Never mind the fact that I just spent the last three paragraphs of my prior post discussing this inane criticism we see from JC fanboys, the "studio" that produced Deepsea is basically Cameron himself: He financed this endeavor (with likely some help from the other entities I mentioned previously). Sheesh look at the first two words in the film's title. LOL. Millenium doesn't appear to be a financier here. They probably just (happily) paid a fee for home distrib rights. I'd never even heard of the Millenium titles for which there are promotional trailers on this disc. Additionally, those other two films people are b*tching about are both Lightstorm and JC is a full producer on one of them. HE is playing a role in their ongoing absence on BD. The degree to which some people complain about this is proportionate to their obvious lack of understanding of the movie business. Last edited by Paul.R.S; 02-12-2018 at 03:05 PM. |
