I just wanted to share an make it known how good the two are in combination. I just recently started using the program (TVersity) so my desktop with the 300 gig hard drive can act as a media server.
Now I can stream all my videos, photos and music to the PS3 wirelessly without having to load them up on a external hard drive and walk all the way to my entertainment room to use them. Not only that TVersity can transcode video codecs that the PS3 can't read into MPEG-2 (which the PS3 can read). So if you have a bunch of home videos as avi or mpg or whatever you can now view them on the PS3. Even FLV is supported. The transcoding is done on the fly, so unlike using a PS3 video converter like Red Kawa's you don't have to wait to play the videos. TVersity can also stream podcasts and live feeds like the Bloomberg feed. All you have to do is enter the URL and voila you can watch bloomberg on your PS3 without paying. It can also do internet radio if thats your thing. You can also use your laptop or iphone or psp to view the videos, photos and music as long as they're connected to the home network. All you have to do is enter the ip address of the media server. TVersity will transcode all videos into the codec that your laptop can support. In fact, if you choose to enable it and set up you firewall and router correctly, allowing port forwarding, you can actually access the content on your media server from any computer connected to the internet. Of course there are obvious security concerns with this, but I am sure advanced users can create VPNs to take care of that. Everything is easy to install and it works flawlessly for me. I don't consider a computer expert and I was able to do it. If you're interested here's the website: http://www.tversity.com/home The FAQ explains everything. And the forums have a thread to nice video URLs you can add. The only downside I found was that transcoding uses serious CPU power so I can't run Folding@Home for my PC and transcode video at the same time. Last edited by actionhank; 01-27-2008 at 03:00 PM. |
