USA STRANGE BREW (1983) - March 1, 2016

Quote:
STRANGE BREW, the 1983 cult movie favorite starring Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as the Canadian beer-guzzling McKenzie Brothers - hops onto HD with a March 1 debut in newly remastered Blu-ray™ and DVD versions from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE).

The film originated with "Great White North," a successful sketch Moranis and Thomas created for Canadian comedy show, Second City TV (SCTV). Though initially intended as just filler for the show's expanded third season, the McKenzie Brothers caught on immediately. Later, some of the two-minute "Great White North" segments would find their way into U.S. versions of SCTV. NBC ordered 90-minute SCTV shows in 1981, and based on affiliate feedback, the network requested the McKenzie Brothers be included in every program. As a result, the Brothers exploded into a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada and the United States.

In 1981, the Brothers released a comedy album, "Great White North," which sold more than one million copies in North America. Sales in Canada topped 350,000 earning a triple-platinum certification from the Canadian Recording Industry Association and #1 on the RPM album charts for a month. It reached # 8 on the American Billboard album charts in early 1982 with "Take Off" (Geddy Lee's hit single) peaking at 16. It was Grammy®-nominated in 1983 for Best Comedy Album.

Strange Brew, in which the Brothers attempt to stop a mad brewer from gaining world dominance, was released in 1983 and immediately struck a chord with dedicated fans, whose numbers grew after years of cable TV airings and home video sales. The film starred Thomas (Stripes, TV's "Comedy Bang! Bang!") and Moranis (Little Shop of Horrors, Ghostbusters) who was making his feature film debut. Max von Sydow (The Exorcist, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Paul Dooley (Cars franchise, Runaway Bride) also starred. Moranis and Thomas also wrote (with Steven De Jarnatt) and directed.

Strange Brew will now be available on Blu-ray for $12.97 SRP and on DVD $5.97 SRP.

Strange Brew
Rating: PG
Run Time: 90 minutes

I really want to get this but considering it's not a widely known movie (more of a cult classic in a way) I don't think they're going to give us a good transfer. I'll wait for reviews first but would love to replace my DVD copy if it's worth it.

I'm so freakin' happy aboat this announcement. Day one purchase for me. Did you know: Looney Tunes voice legend Mel Blanc does the voice of Bob & Doug's Dad in this movie.

Take off! To the Great White North [Geddy Lee singing]

I literally passed on 4 copies of this at Movie Stop just 2 days ago because the snapper cases were in deplorable shape. Man I would have been pissed had I actually bought one and saw this today. Can't freaking wait! More Rick Moranis is always a good thing. Now if we could get Big Bully and Little Giants...

Even if it's an old master, it will still yield more detail than a DVD. And for under $10, that should be worth it.

I think this, "The Big Sleep", and "The Ice Pirates". The other titles I remember from that list were "Salem's Lot", "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", and "Dark of the Sun". Real shame that one of the spots went to the god-awful "Ice Pirates". I mean, I like my 80s cheese, but "The Ice Pirates"? Really? Shocking that a steaming turd like that would get a release before "Virginia Woolf".

"Yeah. OK, well, uh, we found, uh, this mouse in a bottle of YOUR BEER, eh. Like, we was at a party and, uh, a friend of ours - a COP - had some, and HE PUKED. And he said, uh, come here and get free beer or, uh, he'll press charges. So, like, give us our FREE BEER." - Doug McKenzie

You want free beer? Then go to the brewery. This will be the jewel of my collection. I only a handful of original VHS tapes from my youth. This movie is one. I suppose I'm due for an upgrade.

Are those prices Canadian?
