Wow, what an awful looking steelbook! But I guess it suits this mediocre at best movie. IMHO one of the worst MCU movies so far.

That's what somebody says about every new Marvel movie these days.

I'm a huge MCU fan, but Shang-Chi is IMHO totally overrated. Especially the third act was godawful. When Morris appeared, the movie took a nosedive. God, I hated that effing thing so much!

I thought it was the best solo Marvel movie since Black Panther. A solid 8/10. It holds a score of 7.9/10 on IMDb so I’m not the only one.

You're not alone. I was actively bored by SHANG-CHI even before it became a Pixar movie in the last third.

And yes, it was massively over-rated, imo. People were raving about the fight scenes but if you've seen even a few martial arts films, there was nothing special or innovative about them (not to mention that you'd already seen most of them in the trailers). Simu Liu seems like a nice guy but he can't carry a movie. The story was confusing and fundamentally undramatic. And whilst I can't exactly comment on representation, I feel like if I was Chinese I'd be a bit pissed off with all the cliches on show.

I used to read the comic and I'd have much preferred them to go the more ENTER THE DRAGON route. If ETERNALS is a dud, that'll be 0/3 for me in Phase 4 and I'll be officially worried for the MCU.

Shang chi and the last Jedi both have storylines where the good guys get locked up with someone who knows a way out of jail, but don't actually try to get out until the good guys arrive.

I'm wondering how many times Disney writers will use this stupid trick.

Shang chi is a bundle of acts that are not that coherant with each other. I would also like Disney to stay away from wars and such if they are going to dilute the violence down to that acceptable for a 6 year old.

The steelbook is pretty meh. I hate it when the theme of the movie is completely ignored on the cover, instead putting the star of the movie on the front cover instead. Most Tom Cruise and Will Smith movies seem to have their mug shot on every cover as well.

If I ever felt so ambivalent about any movie, I would not just buy it at all... why reward someone when you don't think highly of their work?

Seriously, tho, as someone who was originally ambivalent about the MCU, their movies just keep getting better and better. Shang-Chi takes us somewhere that CBM have never take us before, and it is also the first of its kind to have a predominantly Asian cast, which alone makes it a very worthwhile addition to the genre.

I'm not an expert is martial arts movies, but I've seen all the major ones over the years and this one totally blew me away, we've not seen action like this in CBMs before, at least not that I can remember.

There's a lot going on underneath the surface of the film, many themes that are explored very beautifully but you seem to have missed the forest for the trees... there are many layers to the film at it's sad that you didn't get past the most superficial one...

I genuinely think it's really great that you liked it and that it spoke to you so profoundly. And I genuinely wish I had felt the same way. I want to love every film I sit down to watch. Well, with the exception of CATS.

Where you get insulting (and simultaneously self-aggrandising) is when you suggest that not liking the film is somehow down to a "sad" and "superficial" understanding of themes and narrative. I mean that might be true but it's dickish to presume it. I've worked as a scriptwriter for over 30 years and I've been watching movies for longer than that so I think I have some understanding of these things.

I don't doubt that SHANG-CHI has many themes, I just didn't find any of them very interesting. And in fact, having many themes is not in itself a sign of quality. A lot of the skill of screenwriting is distilling the themes down, not multiplying them.

But it worked for you and that's great. I am not smarter or more virtuous than anyone else for not liking it but nor are you smarter or more virtuous for enjoying it. We find things interesting primarily because they chime with our life experience, not because of our IQ.

I don't know that I would say profoundly, but it seemed to be genuinely engaging in a variety of levels. Now, I think it's a little condescending to think that I am making any assumptions on the part of the viewers. There are many reasons why for some people the most superficial reading of a movie is just the most natural thing in the world - I happen to have been there myself, at some point in time, a very long time ago, and I can understand going to a movie and wanting nothing more than something that is entertaining and nothing more.

Now, as for the work in question, maybe it's not for everyone, or maybe not everyone will be genuinely able to savor it as some of us have. I don't know, but that's not making an assumption about the reasons for it. Just enough to know that a lot of people did enjoy it.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie.

I wouldn't say it was the worst MCU film this year (that honour belongs to Black Widow), but it's not one of my favourites.

I'll get it just to continue my MCU steelbook collection.

This movie started out strong the but the 2nd half was weak. They should have kept the story in the modern world and gotten rid of all the CGI fantasy.

Almost no effort on story anymore from Marvel. I wanted to like this, but it was just cookie cutter. Most people I talk to (non fanboys) tend to agree. Marvel films have been lackluster and are just cranking out the films.

So the real question is not whether it was good or bad but when do we think we will get the steelbook

I am going for an optimisitic "normal" release and that some of us get it on Saturday 13/11

Or should I go for the more realsitic opion that none of us will see it until at least the 18/11?

Disney+ has been updated to now have the imax enhanced versions of the Marvel films. This includes Shang chi. I bet the disk versions of Shang chi don’t feature the imax enhancements, which will be a real shame.

Ordered my copy today, glad I waited to get the Reddit discount. Hopefully venom 2 will come back in stock at release and I can do the same.

I watched this and Star Wars ep8 back to back and couldn't help notice that both had scenes where the good guys get put in jail, only to meet someone already in there that had the capability of just walking out.

Because of consistency, I preordered.
