Default Blu-Ray player or Oppo?

So I currently own a HD television which is NOT capable of handling 1080p resolution, only 720p (native) and 1080i. Lets say with this television I'm watching a standard DVD movie in 720p on the latest Oppo up-converter product and later connect any blu-ray player to watch the same movie although in blu-ray disc format in 720p.

Obviously the blue-ray player is downconverting the image from 1080p, but I'm curious if the difference is noticeable to the human eye from standing say 6 feet away.

Thanks

I would get a Blu-Ray player. So you wouldn't have to later on. Oppo is like $229, save up a few more bucks and you get a Blu-Ray player.

I have an Oppo. It is currently collecting dust. Got it around the same time as my PS3 and probably used it like once.

I watch all my Blu-rays on my 40" 720p TV and it still looks a great deal better than an upconverted DVD. And I'm sitting about 8' away.

Get a Blu-ray player, without a doubt. Not only will it upscale your current DVDs, but it'll also be future proof. Buy new movies on Blu so that you'll be able to fully appreciate a bigger TV.

I have an oppo player I currently use for all my sacds, dvd-as, dualdiscs, and for regular dvds. I let my ps3 just fold and play blu rays. hopefully it will last longer that way.

I have a oppo and a ps3. If I only had one I would go with the blu-ray.
I currently have a 720p projector (100"screen), I use the oppo for standard dvd watching and my ps3 for blu and games. Several movies I have on both blu and dvd. IMO you would have to be blind or just plain not give a crap to not see the difference.
A true HD source will always look better than a upscaled sd source. Don't really care if anyone else agrees. It is like mp3 vs. cd's , cd's sound better you would have to be deaf not to tell the difference. On headphones probably can't tell hook my ipod up to my car or stereo and its obvious.
Not to say that the oppo doesn't look good, because it looks real good. It's just blu-rays look better. How much better is the question.
I watch allot of movies so the little details are quite obvious to me. It is usually a sharper cleaner image with richer colors and greater detail. Take Casino Royale for example every one knows judi dench is old but on blu-ray she looks older than before. They even seem to have shot the scene in her apartment "softer" when the camera is on her to lessen it somewhat.
For what its worth I sit around 18 feet away from my screen and you can tell the difference from a blu-ray vs. a standard dvd. I mainly use the oppo to keep "mileage" down on my ps3.

so i emailed oppo. this is what they said

"We have not yet aligned ourselves to the HD DVD, Blu-Ray, or combo high definition video formats. The primary reason for this is that we feel that neither of these hardware designs are mature enough to be implemented and released by OPPO Digital. Our operational motto is to "make a mature product better". The HD DVD and Blu-Ray specifications are continually changing, and we can't afford to create a solution which will become obsolete within a year.

We are vigorously investigating all current and future hardware solutions, however we do not know when we will commit to them."

You forgot to mention the size of your TV screen.
From personal experience, on a 62" 720P DLP RP the difference is HUGE (same viewing distance as yours)
In any case your money will be spent wiser with buying a Bonus View Blu-Ray player. Futureproof your investment! (and don't forget Blu-Ray is not only about perfect A/V - it is also the new generation of bonus features that OPPO and SD DVD will not provide you with)

I imagine they will be coming out with a HD product over the next year or so. Especially since the format war is effectively over. If Bluray takes off this year, the price of laser components and chipsets will come down.

However, they do support SACD and DVD-Audio which never seemed to catch on either. So I suspect the cost of parts is real important.

When they do add Bluray it will be a killer machine.

I'm wondering if the Bluray spec will add deep color?

can`t hurt if you have it 2 players last longer then one and keeping it purpose specific ,never a bad idea, besides blu-ray rules and you def notice a difference

again SACD is NOT dead
Best audio format around, even the Blu-Ray audio formats fall way short of it.

and by the way, everybody here is right on the ball, Blu-Ray is better.
The storage capacity alone allows for massive amounts of data.

and it's obvious that a Blu-Ray player can play SACD discs since the PS3 can do it. They just need to add the right chipset to decode it and preferably output SACD via DSD across the HDMI.
