Default 2 chan PCM

I was reading in a thread from this forum that I can't find now, someone said 2 chan PCM (from optical cable) sounded better than DD or dts. Can you get surround sound from 2 chan PCM?

Thanks,
Brad

It's probably better that we can't find that thread. PCM 2.0 sounds better if the source was only 2 channel. I think I'd choose DD or DTS anything over 2 channel for a movie.

Edit: Check that - I'd choose two channel if the movie audio master was 2-channel or mono.

Most receivers can apply fake surround processing like Dolby Prologic II to 2 channel PCM sources to create the illusion of 5.1 sound.

If a stereo LPCM track is encoded with Dolby Surround as releases like the Blu-Ray for Ghost in the Shell (Japanese release) was, then Prologic II(x) will be able to decode a discreet center and mono surround channel, essentially giving you a 4.0 track.

Before I got an HDMI receiver, I preferred to have the PS3 downmix PCM 5.1/7.1 and Dolby TrueHD tracks to 2.0 LPCM stereo and let the receiver process it instead of listening to a lossy track. Pick whatever sounds best to you.
