Default 4K Playback Issue

Lately I've noticed that the picture from my player will slightly "slo-mo" for a couple of seconds and then go normal again. Happens several times watching a disc and it's definitely only when I'm using my 4K player. Could I possibly just need one of those disc cleaners for the laser?

I think you must say the name of your player.

Yes. I know nothing about it. As you see i have a different player. I'm sure someone else here can help you.

It's not the best. The next model up is fairly well regarded.

If you can test the motion with a benchmark disc and the issue is persistent, I'd think about trying another player. It's worth trying a new HDMI cable as well as making sure all your post processing is off.

If you go back and watch the same scene does is the motion still the same?

Hopefully you'll get further info in the player's owners' thread.

Two thoughts come to mind with the UBP-X700 (and can also happen with the UBP-X800M2).

The first is they can have weird behaviors if you try to use them before they've fully booted. I turn them on and then wait for the menus to be up for a few seconds before I insert a disk (the most problematic is turning on the unit via the eject button and then insert a disk, thereby causing it to autoplay the disk ASAP).

The second potential issue is having 'quick start mode' on. This basically means the unit doesn't actually ever turn off so problems can carry over from one session to another. Another reason to turn this off is it causes the device to use a relatively large 30-40 watts of power even when it's "off". Even with 'quick start mode' off I've occasionally seen problems that only cleared up by unplugging the unit for at least 30-45 seconds.

I'll have to pop in a movie tonight and test that out. I just know it happened with several movies. This player is still my first one and it was something affordable with DV. And I bought it refurbished. I can't afford to spend $300 on just a media player like everyone else here. I checked out the UBPX800 and a refurbished one is in my range, but not at the current time. That's why I'm hoping this issue can just be fixed. And I'm not even sure what you mean by post-processing.

See, I've never had this issue in four years, though, and I know half the time that is how I turn the player on.

As far as quick start, I wouldn't even know how to turn that on, so I doubt that is the issue.

Sorry, that kind of technical stuff might as well be Japanese to me most of the time.

You can get some great deals at Best Buy with open boxes.

Post processing is anything added to the source, take a look in your motion control settings in your TV's menus, post your TV's model number and I'll go through the settings. I'd also check that enhanced HDMI is enabled.

I'll check my TV model. I only know it's a TCL from end of 2019. But I've had my settings all the same for entire time I've had the TV and player, so why all of a sudden would that stuff matter? Just curious.

It might not matter, but it's best to eliminate causes when troubleshooting.

I would highly recommend using a laser lens cleaner if you start experiencing issues like that. I would use it every few months, even if you ensure your discs are clean before inserting them. I had weird out of the blue playback issues with my Panasonic 4k player once and the lens cleaner took care of it. I also recommend completely disconnecting the power cable for a minute and repowering from scratch as that causes a full reboot and can help clear up weird sudden playback issues as well.

The laser lens cleaner won't damage anything. I saw somewhere that they can damage things internally.

Try Advanced picture settings, disable all the settings, enable Natural Cinema.

Looking at your TV is does have some motion issues, but if that's not the issue and is player related, I'd ask if it's plugged into a powerstrip or surge protector? and if you can try it directly into an outlet.

I only use it once a year, since I don't watch discs but maybe 1-2 times a week and I always make sure my discs are as free of dust, lint, and smudges as possible. If you watch a lot of discs though, it's beneficial to use the lens cleaner more frequently. It's just a CD with a little brush on it and it takes less than a minute for it to do its thang. I've never had issues as a result of using them.
