Default What do others think of your Blu-ray collection?

Let's face it. Physical media is a niche interest at this point. Movies and music especially. Streaming and digital content isn't going anywhere any time soon. While 4K UHD is inarguably the best way to access most video content for home use, it isn't what the average consumer seeks out.

With that said, what do others think of your blu ray collection? Most of you have collections in the hundreds, others in the thousands. I've seen little Ikea shelves where others live and most average, non enthusiasts, have like maybe idk 10 or 15 movies tops. I have about fifty 4k titles. That's my movie collection. Most people would see it and go "wow this guy really likes movies," but around here my collection is tiny.

Do others find your collections interesting? Anyone ever find it strange? I'm super curious tbh.

Cheers guys

The average reaction is probably "he love movies, but this guy has wasted a lot of money, space, and effort."

Nobody in real life knows about my collection except my parents, so there's nothing to be thought about it - and I'd like to keep it that way.

Generally speaking I don't talk about it with people (which is why you all here are so important as by and large most folks here "get it"). There are a handful of folks that know about it locally however and they typically find it really interesting and actually get fairly excited by it in much the same way I do simply because it's something that is simply not seen any more in this day and age. (I have a dedicated "Movie Room" with aisles and such.) Everyone has their interests/vices... I'm married with a kid and will be kicking Forty's door down later this year. I'm a homebody largely and not interested in what others think about it too much at this point. I suppose it also helps that when talking about my collection however I also mention that I've got the entire thing digitized and housed on a private server for easy access from every tv in the home/internet capable device as well, and so that also tends to change the nature of the conversation.

Most of my friends have their own collections, all but one (who has a bigger collection) being much smaller. But my kids think I'm nuts. The grandkids however, love it and cant wait to run upstairs to my office and pick out movies to watch over the weekend...

Just my wife, dog, sister, and parents really know I have a collection. Houseguests don't get to see it anyway. When movies come up at work or whatever, how you watched it doesn't really come up. But when I used to work in an office instead of at home, I had deliveries to the office all the time, so had a joke conveyor belt to my desk from reception

Only reason anyone knows it's when my wife brings up how much wasted money is sitting in our Steeler room downstairs. And that wasted money will continue to grow as long as we keep supporting the medium!

I'm fortunate enough to have those around me in my circle of friends and family think I have a pretty awesome large collection of movies. I think the unique part of my collection everyone around me finds so fascinating is that I have a huge love for Asian cinema and that I have acquired a lot of foreign films on blu-ray and dvds over the years, decades at this point in time.

I don't boast about it, but I've had mixed reactions leaning towards impressive. Yeah I've had the typical "blowing money" " wasting space", but I've been collecting since 2008. It's not like I went out and blew thousands on 2,000 blu rays. It took time. Also, it's not a waste of space to ME and that is all that matters. It's my library. Libraries aren't a waste.

I've also had my interest in film questioned like I'm obsessed and my priorities are out of whack. Yeah, very opinionated people I run into sometimes. I work, take care of my kid, my lady is never neglected, and I always make time for life. I also make time for my individual passion, and having passion is not something to criticize. I love film and I love to do art and write(both being my stock and trade). I've no shame in my game.

I know too many mediocre people with no discernible talents or aspirations, and no passion for anything... but they always have something to say about others.

I had an ex who wanted to change me, who pulled the "it's either me or your geeky collection". Mind you i worked hard, and gave as much time for her as I could. It was never enough, because i dabbled in my passion more times than she wanted me to... In reality, she was a self absorbed monopolizer who didn't respect me as an individual or my interests. Didn't want any involvement in my life, she just wanted me involved in hers.

So that relationship death blow that she pulled naturally didn't end well. I didn't choose my collection over my relationship, I just wasn't gonna let anyone make me choose either way. Any girl that puts that shit on me is gonna hit the road, always. It's not cool, it's disrespectful and a real woman would never feel so insecure and pathetic enough to be threatened by a person's own interests. I've no time for their bruised ego.

Never settle or let anyone change what makes you a passionate individual. People will either appreciate that have passion for SOMETHING, or they can f--k right off with their mediocrity. Not having passion for anything is a waste of life.

I wouldn't be able to respect anyone who told to my face that my collection was a "waste" of money and space. Obviously, if it's something that I value and enjoy, it's not wasteful. People can be so tactless sometimes.

Yes and Yes. Collection up on the second floor with the Media Server. Up next flix go in a drawer of entertainment center. Holds 40 or so. So yeah Wife just loves it, hah. Son doesn't give a hoot. Ever since I told my daughter she can have my collection when I kick, I never eat anything she makes for me.

It's not something I call attention to and I'm not parading new people through my place so really the only people who know about it have known about it for a while, so it isn't really a conversation piece.

my wife hates it. she likes movies but has vastly different tastes than i do so considers most of what i buy to be "stupid sh!t". she also tends to just want to see movies she hasn't seen (though is very guilty of watching many of her faves "if nothing else is on")

others are wowed for sure. many assume i must have everything but are shocked that i don't have any number of dramas or comedies . on the other hand i have a large selection of old school kung fu that most have never heard of.

i do take a peek when i go to friends houses (especially people i haven't meet or been to there house before) and see what they have. someone said 10-15 titles but i find that its usually more than that. more like 20-50 (especially if they have kids). young people may have none though as physical doesn't seem to appeal to the new generation all that much.

Who needs other people when you have movies?

In all seriousness, I know someone who’s collection rivals mine, so he can’t say nothing!

Very well said! It's a hobby, something everyone should have. It doesn't hurt anyone, it isn't illegal, I don"t ever let important expenses slide so that I can buy a Blu-ray... if any of my friends or family criticized my collection I would tell them to p*ss off.

My wife isn't into collecting Blu-rays as much as I am, but she understands my love for it and doesn't have an issue with it. Just like I don't have any problem with her collection of shoes and purses. Ultimately, her's is the only opinion that matters, and I determined very early in our relationship that she's cool with my love of movies and collecting them.

That reminds me of a reality show I watched years ago, where a young guy whose father was a set designer for films, inherited his fathers home after he passed which was also his childhood home. It was an incredible medieval style house up in the Hollywood Hills and was decorated like a castle with the knight's armor suits standing in the hallways and everything. He was engaged to a beautiful model type who wanted him to sell the house (it was worth quite a bit) and buy something "more conventional" for them to move into after they married. His fiancé and their "relationship counselor" were ganging up on him because of his emotional attachment to the house. I kept screaming at the Tv, "They are the ones with the problem, not you! Dump the ***** and keep the house!"

My wife doesn't really understand why I like physical media so much (she streams everything) and doesn't share my taste in film but she loves the joy it brings me. That is the way it should be....

Honestly I think most people have had a hobby or two in their lives that other people wouldn't understand. There's plenty I don't get. But it sure isn't my business.

A lot of people collect stuff. Maybe even most people, to varying degrees. Some people collect strange stuff. And really, most people who collect things, collect things with less practical value than movies.
