Default Did this guy write this last year?

Its pretty much done and over with. He doesn't mention at all that Warner went blu and that sales of HD dvd is almost nonexistant.

"New York -- As the Blu-Ray/HD DVD standards battle rages on, consumers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Should they plunk down the cash for a Blu-Ray DVD player, go the HD route, or simply wait it out?"

I can understand that this article is about universal players but if he thought about it at a price tag of $799 with how the format war is ending its total pointless to buy a universal player.

The writer keeps using the term DVD when talking about DVDs, Bluray Discs, and HD-DVDs. It's a very confusing read at times. Like this:

Quote:
Blu-Ray and HD both have technology that lets consumers see DVDs in true high definition when watching on an HD TV
Is he talking about upconverting DVDs or is he talking about Bluray discs and HD-DVDs?

And what's with this line:

Quote:
“up converting” DVD players’ quality rivals both Blu-Ray and HD
I'm sure he's talking about the upconversion in their players being better than the upcomversion in the Blu-ray and HD-DVD players, but it sounds almost like he's saying upconverting a regular DVD is better than watching a Bluray. he also makes out like no one else makes upconverting players except Oppo. And if you're going to spend $229 on an upconverting player, you might as well just buy an HD-DVD player for less.

What can you really expect from Fox News, but man, no wonder people get confused.

Don't forget, this is the same news organization that claimed Mass Effect was full of wanton sexual exploitation.

Quote:
While many market watchers think Blu-Ray will emerge as the winner of the format wars, no one expects the fight to shake out anytime soon, given movie studios keep releasing DVDs in both formats.
scratches head no one expects the fight to shake out soon? This guy apparently doesn't know too many people... movie studios (plural) keep releasing in both formats? Last I checked, there was one studio, Warner, which announced it would stop doing so in a few months...

I have to believe that this lady doesn't normally report on tech news, and is totally lost. This article, even if you forget about her implication that the war is still an even battle, is confusing on so many fronts to the average reader.

Anyone who hasn't done their homework will be misled in a number of directions by this article.

I take particular exception to the virtues of up-conversion. For example:

But for those consumer who don’t have the nearly $1,000 to spend on a universal DVD player, there’s another way to get true HD out of existing DVDs, thanks to consumer electronics company Oppo Digital.

First, it pretends that you are going to get "true HD" from an SD DVD, which, obviously is not possible. Second, it clearly gives the impression that these up-converting players are a niche and this strange little Oppo is one of the few you're going to find.

So wrong on so many levels. But then, I would expect no more from any "news" service under the Fox brand.
