Default Just bought new Dell with BD Burner!

Just ordered a smoking XPS 420 with a CD/DVD/BD 50GB burner in it. Should be fun. Dell offering $700 off selected XPS 420 machines. Couldn't pass that up. I'll make 50GB blu-rays of my AVCHD video from my Sony HD camera now. Sweet!

$1774 as I configured it, including what I said in my first post and

750GB HDD
512MB Nvidia card
3GB 800 SIMMs
Accelerator and video input/TV tuner
Adobe Premiere and other burning software
2.1 speakers
7.1 audio
built in LCD screen on box
LAN and WiFi
Multi card reader
Bluetooth stuff
Windows Vista Ultimate
and more

You can get similar system with smaller HDD and BD player only and no vide accelerator and TV tuner and no speakers etc..for around $12-1300

For $1900, I bought a XPS 720.

4GB RAM - 800 MHz
Nvidia 8800 GT 512 MB
Blu-ray Drive/Burner
7.1 Audio
250GB HDD (not too expensive to upgrade in future)
Vista Home Premium

with 4 years of warranty. Also snatched free printer/scanner and $100 gift card..

By the way, the Blu-ray drive isn't that good compared to stand-alone players. Can't play some latest discs. Firmware support is crap. It's from Philips. =/

Is there a way to backup my movies with a Blu Ray burner? That may be worth the $300 investment in a OEM drive.

If your movies are home movies then sure.

If not ... there is copy protection.

Pretty sure he is talking about a desktop while you are talking about Laptops. Which are all XPS, btw I have a 1710 as well as a 1730, both of which are laptops, lol.

Can anyone relate their experiences using the Blu Ray burner on the Dell XPS 420?

- What authoring programs are included?
- Have you created discs with high def material?
- How was playback on the a player such as the PS3?
- What are the specs for the burner?
- etc

Thanks

How much extra did you have to pay for the BD burner?

Generally, BD burners come with the Cyberlink stuff which basically creates BDAV which is fine but if you want to have menus, etc... you will need to get something else.

I got the XPS420 with the BD drive as well. It was about 1400 with tax and shipping. Couldn't resist it was a good deal. I'm not sure if it can burn BD. Can someone help me verify? When I looked under the hardware manager, it list the drive as a Philips BD-RE 1001. Can I burn BD disc? Thanks in advance.
