It is not possible to do better than that setup for under a thousand dollars! Believe me and buy this bargain as soon as you can possibly do so.

Hate to say it, but I'm not sure there is one unless your interpretation of the word "good" is different than mine. This will be a challenge. Maybe check the seller sites for used A/V equipment, speakers and reciever.... probably your best bet for the price and still trying to maintain a level of quality.

He's just upset because his son killed him with a pillow.

In any case, there are good HTiBs for that price - the Samsung HT-TQ85 - or the many Sony ones whose number I can't remember and will get back to you on that. If you are looking for HD sound, you'd need at least $1500 for decent speakers and an Onkyo 605 receiver.

You are far out of his price range now.

I would try to find a used Onkyo 605, 705 or 805. Then look for used speaker packages on line. Craig's list, e-bay, etc.

If I had aprox 1K to spend, this is exactly what I would do.

Onkyo HT-SP908 is an Onkyo 605 and 7.1 surround set for $750. Not sure how good the speakers are, but my 7 year-old Onkyo HTiB speakers are still kicking and sound great.

Won't sound as good as towers and such, but it'll still sound incredible at a fraction of the cost. (some may disagree, but their center channel probably costs more than my whole setup )

Infinity speakers are good. As are many others. Stay away from Sony speakes though. Sound cheap and lifeless. If you find a speaker package you are interested in, create another thread and tell us the brand name to get some opinions.

Cant loose with Onkyo. Let the hunt begin!

Thanks bro. Hey! I know you will find some nice equipment out there. Take your time and review many different speaker packages. It will give you a good idea on quality and if the seller is asking a fair price for it. You can always make offers to the seller too. If you find a brand and certain type of speaker for sale, check out Amazon.com for this type of speaker. They have a ton of customer reviews on their items and it will give you a fair assesment on customer satisfaction with said item. Have fun!

I have the Onkyo HT SP-908 7.1 system. Its great for the value. I highly reccomend it. You just cant beat the quality for the 700$ ish price range you can find it at.

Breaking the system down..What you get with that set up is

the Onkyo 605 receiver (350-400$ value)

7.1 speakers (which sound great)

an upconverting DVD player (could probably get 50 bucks from a friend for it who hasnt converted to Blu-ray ) personally, mine is still in the box unopened.

and an iPod docking station that you can use with the receiver to recharge/control/listen to your iPod if you have one.

I had an older Home theater system that this set up replaced and I didnt realise how crap my system was until I watched my first Blu-ray and heard the sound from this system.

You wont be dissapointed unless you had some super duper system you are trying to replace (and I doubt that since you are on a budget like I was in when I chose this system).

See I want to get a nice audio system too, but I'm still living in an apartment, and was kinda fraid I would be super duper loud if I got an audio system more than what I already have.
