Criterion Wild Strawberries (1957)

Wild Strawberries Blu-ray
Wild Strawberries Pre-order

Quote:
Traveling to accept an honorary degree, Professor Isak Borg—masterfully played by veteran director Victor Sjöström—is forced to face his past, come to terms with his faults, and make peace with the inevitability of his approaching death. Through flashbacks and fantasies, dreams and nightmares, Wild Strawberries dramatizes one man's remarkable voyage of self-discovery. This richly humane masterpiece, full of iconic imagery, is a treasure from the golden age of art-house cinema and one of the films that catapulted Ingmar Bergman to international acclaim.

Special Features:
  • New high-definition digital film transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
  • Audio commentary by film scholar Peter Cowie
  • Introduction by director Ingmar Bergman
  • Ingmar Bergman on Life and Work, a ninety-minute documentary by filmmaker and author Jörn Donner
  • Behind-the-scenes footage shot by Bergman
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film writer Mark Le Fanu

In the Blu-ray.com review it says >>>

Quote:
"This new 2K digital transfer was created on an ARRISCAN film scanner from the original 35mm camera negative at Chimney Pot in Stockholm. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, jitter, and flicker were manually removed using Image Systems' Phoenix and the Foundry's NUKE.

The screenshots look incredible. I wonder though why a label like Criterion still orders
2K instead of 4K transfers for some Blu-rays.

I don't know if it has anything to do with ordering, but rather with what is available

2K transfers done on ARRISCAN/ARRILASER from the ON usually look very impressive.

There is a pretty good number of them out now.

These two releases also use top-notch transfers

Any chance this one is part of the best buy/amazon criterion sale upon its release?

So Wild Strawberries is officially released and the sale is still going on. We will have to wait to see if the price goes down throughout the day.

Thumbs up

I just watched this for the first time, what a beautiful and depressing film all at the same time. I feel like I have an idea of what the main purpose and theme of it was, however since it was the first time seeing it and being that it was the very first foreign film I’ve ever watched I feel I may need to revisit it soon. Really excited about getting my Ingmar Bergman set now.

Ingmar Bergman's films reward repeated viewings.
Every time you watch a Bergman film you will find another layer to think about.
Wait til you see The Seventh Seal, Winter Light, Persona, Cries and Whispers.

I remember watching most of Seventh Seal years ago but I don't really recall any of it, so I need to see it again. Winter Light looks great, I am looking forward to the others.

The Virgin Spring is my personal fav. You can't beat a good revenge flick, particularly in the hands of a supreme talent like Ingmar. Give that one spin when you can!

I love all of the above mentioned tremendously, but I'd like to throw a couple of my other favorites: Fanny and Alexander, the television version (probably my favorite Bergman); Hour of the Wolf; The Silence; and the Serpent's Egg (Bergman's version of noir).

Can anyone confirm if the BFI UK release of Wild Strawberries is more or less the same transfer / video as the Criterion?
