My old plasma finally crapped out on me three weeks ago and I purchased a 4k TV (my 3rd but more on that in a second).
Having been more present on this forum over the last year, I've become a lot more curious about 4k/Dolby Vision etc. but still haven't made the jump not owning a player yet. I do have some films on 4k but I only purchased them if they came with a restored bluray of the film. Why it's taken me so long to make the jump: 1) I had so many DVDs and slowly started upgrading to bluray and figured I'd stop there. At the time, 4k wouldn't have benefited the set up I had. I wasn't really down for upgrading another format. That and the fact that going to 4k meant a new tv, player, HDMI cables, etc. 2) When I finally decided to see what the 4k fuss was about I purchased a few over a couple of black Fridays. All of them had Dirty Screen Effect / Banding that I noticed and it just tossed me out of the movie. The hassle of trying to find a good screen got to be too much and I stuck with the old plasma until it died. 3) Reading about how unless your screen is x-size, you sit x-feet away, your set up is calibrated this particular way was a turn off. Again, seemed more of a hassle. 4) Finally, reading up on how players had freezing issues (still do!) and the only good ones are $500+ seems ludicrous. I mean, how are we in 2023 and company are still making players that MAY play certain dissc and we're stuck with the Panny or higher priced models. -An offshoot of this being the recent amount of scratched discs now out there and 4k being more finicky than bluray Those have been my reasons but I guess I am closer now more than before to diving into the 4k pool. I downloaded a Dolby Vision demo file to test that feature out on the TV and though this set isn't super hi-end (Hisense u7k) it looked fantastic. Now I wonder, what have I been missing? Anyway, thought I'd ask others who have stuck with blu what has you keeping with that format. |
