The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh / Doctor Syn: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
Posted at Blu-Ray.com I couldn't find a listing for this here, and there's very little about the Blu-Ray on the "Intertubes." So I figured I’d add a bit of an entrée. This is one of my very fave Childhood memories. It occupies a very warm spot right where I live. It’s a bit of Comfort Food for an occasionally troubled soul. The Story is an Adventure, and obviously written with kids in mind, but at the same time, there is no “talking down” at all. No literary condescension to simpler minds. This is solid and entertaining with an arc that moves along at a nice pace. I’m not quite sure of this, but as far as I can discern, it was originally broadcast on Network TV on "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color,” as opposed to the misinformation on IMDB claiming it as "The Magical World of Disney." But maybe that moniker is a more global nomenclature. Great Cast. Lotsa nice acting and wonderful characters. McGoohan is pretty fantastic and particularly more eerie as Doctor Syn, the Village Preacher, than as the Scarecrow, which I though was kinda cool. The Story is in Three Segments/Episodes that are somewhat independent of each other, but still a solid 3-Episode Arc. Very similar to Adventure/Sc-Fi TV of today. Buffy certainly comes to mind. It was also severely edited down to an Hour and a Half to be shown in the Theaters in Britain. According to IMDB, Part I "aired opposite The Beatles' first appearance on CBS's The Ed Sullivan Show, 9 February 1964..." which is odd because I sure have vivd memories seeing both. Maybe it was somewhat different on the West Coast. I picked this up from the Disney Club a short while back when it was released. It’s now around $10-$12 clams if you buy it with a few other Disney Movies and “Things.” Much cheaper than the $39.99 with a fake List Price of $56.99, at Amazon… and significantly cheaper than the $289.95 for the OOP DVD Box Set. The DVD Collection was pretty spectacular to my eyes. The Blu-Ray seems more detailed. |

"I couldn't find a listing for this here"
Maybe this or were you looking for something different. The fake list price at Amazon is just the average scalper/reseller/vulture price since Amazon can't sell it at all since it's a DMC Exclusive. Regular price is $25 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=322166/ |

More trivia. It was on Disney the same three weeks that the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan. As the show times were half an hour apart, we watched Scarecrow for half an hour, then jumped to Sullivan as the Beatles opened the show, then back to Disney to finish Scarecrow, then back to Sullivan as the Beatles closed the shows as well. Fun times, fond memories, and way before folks had any way to record.

Thanx for the Heads-Up.... I even contributed a few meandering comments there... sigh... Can we add these comments to that thread somehow? |

The feature-film version Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow was released
in November 1963 in the U.K. I've seen the one-sheets. If you have access to the newspapers of the time you'll see it supported another Disney film, it was a double-feature. The longer 3-episode version The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh started on American TV in February 1964. Also, "The Wonderful World of Color" underwent a few variations in title in it's early years. |
