EA Expects PS3 to outsell 360 in 2008

Wii to dominate console sales with Sony's flagship console cementing second place

Electronic Arts has released estimates of what it thinks will be the range of hardware sales in North America and Europe through 2008, and while the Wii unsurprisingly leads, it's the PlayStation 3 that will hold a strong second place.

That will, according to the estimates, be particularly true in Europe, where EA expects the PlayStation 3 to sell between 5 and 6 million units across the year, compared to just 1.5-2.5 million for the Xbox 360.

That means that while the company thinks the two will tie in North America on 4.5 to 5.5 million unit sales, the two sets of numbers combined give Sony's flagship console a compelling 3.5 million lead.

The report predicts the Nintendo Wii will win the year, with a combined total of between 12 and 14 million units sold, while the PlayStation 2 will continue on its long tail drop-off, shifting between 3.9 and 4.9 million units.

That yields a total home console sales estimate for the two regions of between 31.4 and 38.4 million units.

The report also gives estimates for the year's handheld sales as well, noting the company's belief that it expects the Nintendo DS to outsell the PlayStation Portable by over 2-to-1.

According to the numbers the DS should shift between 14 and 16 million units, while the PSP will sell around 6 to 8 million units, giving a combined handheld total for the year of between 20 and 24 million.

Nintendo Wii: 12-14 million
PlayStation 3: 9.5-11.5 million
Xbox 360: 6-8 million
PlayStation 2: 3.9-4.9 million

Combined handheld estimates for 2008 are as follows:

Nintendo DS: 14-16 million
PlayStation Portable: 6-8 million

If EA thinks that PS3 will outsell 360 this year then maybe they should stop screwing around saying its too hard to code for and not short change Madden 09 like they have been on the ps3 the last 2 yrs!!

It should be against the law to have madden 08 on 360 at 60 fps and sony's only at 30 fps!!

Madden 09 should run at 60 fps---EA made a statement last year (a couple weeks after Madden 08's release) that all their sports titles would from now on. At least that's what I remember reading here on this forum...

Madden 08 is utter garbage.. 07 is better.. graphics remind me of the atari 2600.. EA seems to be going backwards...

burnout paradise is an ea game and it works pretty well. at this point, their ps3 titles should be ok.

Madden 08 is better in every way then 07 except that spectacular catch has made the game very arcadish like.

Madden in general is a struggle for EA, but not releasing an equal copy on ps3 was a slap in the face of a more superior machine.

Yes I know Wii will do good there as well, but any lead PS3 has over 360 will only get that much larger when throwing in Japanese market numbers.

Including those numbers, PS3 outsold 360 in 07.

Any list of numbers that begin with a prediction of wii sales from 12-14m across two regions is going to be suspect for the rest.

EA probably didn't include Japan estimates because they have little to no presence there and whatever happens there doesn't really effect their bottom line.

the 360 developed in it's 2nd year...the PS3 will do the same...

the funny thing is...the PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide in 07...

but in 08 the PS3 will outsell the 360 in the US...and obviously worldwide...

Considering how respectably well the PS3 did vs the 360 last year, this year will be a sure win.

Last year the 360 had halo 3, easily its flagship game. This year the PS3 has MGS4, Gran Turismo 5 and the wildly anticipated Killzone 2 and Resistance 2. And others

Hopfully EA internal studios will stop screwing their PS3 games. Hopefully it'll move to lead-platform status. And as for Orange Box frame rates, hopefully the rumors about a batch being able to improve rates is a reality.

i just hope developers start using all the room on the blurays and dumb down the xbox versions. i think its bull shit we have to be held back cause they cant hold as much as we can
