Pieter posted this in the film forum thread, but I'm going to post it here too. Just watched it. Professor Coogler showing his true film nerd stripes. Explains all the formats. Even lists all 10 theaters playing this in IMAX 70mm and 5 playing it in 5 perf 70mm. After this video, I wouldn't be surprised if he were a longtime lurker here.

AFI: For SINNERS, what was the creative reasoning behind choosing to shoot on Ultra Panavision with a 2.76:1 aspect ratio and 1.43:1 IMAX formats, and how did it affect your overall visual storytelling?

Autumn: The conversation started with a call from the studio asking Ryan if we had thought about shooting any large format. Ryan called me after to discuss it, and we decided to get a test going. He also mentioned exploring THE HATEFUL EIGHT format (2.76:1) for the width to showcase our Mississippi Delta landscape. He was going to be in LA for a day, and I set up a screening at FotoKem with Andrew Oran. I asked Andrew if he had anything from THE HATEFUL EIGHT that we could see in 2.76 and anything else he could get his hands on. Andrew created a little menu of 70mm clips, and Ryan and I met there to screen prints. At one point, he stood up and said, “This is what I’ve been missing,” and I knew exactly what he meant. There is nothing more beautiful and nostalgic than watching a film print in a dark room.

When we finally tested and saw what was possible with these two formats, there was no longer a question. It was jaw-dropping to watch our desert tests in 1.43 in the screening room at IMAX in Playa Vista. The two formats felt far more immersive than anything we had seen. The IMAX sequences are used as a candid look into the characters. The 2.76 anamorphic frame feels so cinematic and accentuates the scope that is in the script. You’re watching a movie through the most beautiful of lenses, and then when you step into the IMAX world, it almost feels like a look behind the curtain and into the soul of the character. This pulls you deeper in, and it becomes an experience.

Locked in my preorder for the steel over at GRUV for $32 shipped using the infinite 20% trick. The better half and I are making it a double feature tonight at the theater: this and Drop. I'm really looking forward to both!

Going from 2.76:1 to 1.43:1 AR in the home video format is going to be... well, interesting, at the very least.

Aspect Ratios with Sinners Director Ryan Coogler - YouTube
Small nitpick that I see perpetuated quite often: Larger sensors/film backs themselves do not in fact facilitate a shallower depth of field.

I doubt that if the disc have different aspect ratio, it's gonna be from 2.76 to 1.43 (since no movie in 1.43 have been released before in that ratio for home media). At most, it's gonna be like other Imax movies that change to 1.90 or like some Nolan movie to 1.78 ratio (Which for me actually captures the Imax experience)

Looked and sounded great in a Dolby Cinema; can't wait to rewatch it on 4K disc in my home theater.

This was a fun movie but I was really disappointed with the use of Ultra-Panavision 70mm. They're using the widest ratio and almost exclusively using the tightest possible lens with mostly medium shots and close ups. The IMAX camera was used for wideshots more and I kept asking myself why did they use Ultra-Panavision if everything is going to be kept tight?

I kept thinking about how the Hateful 8 frequently has massive scope shots where you can see all 3 corners of the room, groups of characters from head to toe, and beautifully framed the landscape and stagecoach for 2.76. Sinners might as well have been shot in standard anamorphic 2.35 and cropped to 2.76. It just didn't have that unique width Ultra-Panavision offers.

I'm honestly going to have to see it again in a standard screening because the IMAX footage cropped to 2.76 will look closer to Ultra-Panavision than the actual Ultra-Panavision shots did.

I honestly wouldn't mind if the 4K offered both versions but we know that it will be one or the other.

Batman v. Superman in 4K is a mix of 2.39 and 1.43 full 15 perf IMAX ratio.

So we could get a mix of 2.76 and 1.43 here, or 2.76 and 1.78 (which would look best in my opinion) similar to Nolan’s movies on disk.

Hopefully we get the switching ratios, I saw this yesterday (with Coogler showing up to introduce it) and the IMAX sequences are really worth it, even though the vast majority of the film is 2.76.

The single best shot in the whole movie, an extended dance sequence, is full IMAX and even opens up from 2.76 to the taller ratio at the beginning of the shot.

Interesting........How often does a pre-order go up on the same day as the theatrical release? I went with the steelbook.

The better half and I just got home from this one...wow! Hell of a film! It's going to look and sound absolutely fantastic on disc. You can definitely tell it was shot on film and it's all the better for it. Very glad I preordered the steelbook blind from Gruv earlier today just in case.

[Show spoiler]A couple characters including Hailee were alive

Coogler said he’s not interested in making a sequel. Dont think id want one without his involvment.
