Default What makes Blu-ray better than HD-DVD?

I have done my research before entering the format war. I chose Blu because the blu-ray discs went up to 50GB dual layer, because of the strong studio support and along with the best in high def sound, Uncompressed PCM. I also really found it interesting that a lot of the industries top leading filmmakers approved of Blu-ray because they felt it gave them the best transfer and preserved the look for their films. But it recently came to my attention that to my very own brother supports HD-DVD. He believes it is the better format because of extras and HDI menus. I tried to explain about BD-Java and the what the future holds for blu with profile 2.0. He fails to see my point and truly believes that the transfers are all the same and that there is no real difference between Dolby Tru HD and Uncompressed PCM. I am just wondering if there is any website that is not biased that will flat out show why blu-ray is the better format. I guess hes in denial that his format lost due to Warner Bros.

Tell your brother this....

A little butter, five minutes in the toaster and blu-ray discs taste delicious...

Dolby true hd is identical bit by bit to PCM after it is uncompressed.

Another important difference between the 2 formats is banwith. Blu ray has much wider banwith than hd DVD. So bd can transfer more info to the receiver and display. Which is another reason why movies like transformers can't cope with pcm.

As far as transfers goes, only wb is releasing in both and the transfers are the same because they are doing them for the lowest common tech spec, which is hd DVD.

If your brother is a hardcore DUDster, no point. If he is willing to give BD a look and a listen, put something choice on for him to experience.

He won't have much choice for long any ways. DUD will be pulling up their tents and closing shop this year.

Tell your brother to go here...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...l_disc_formats

It is the Wikipedia entry showing the comparison between the two. If he has 1/2 a brain cell, he should be able to see that Blu-Ray is superior in every way. Good luck...

More gigs: 50 gigs right now maybe higher than 200 gig way down the road.
Better audio: Uncompressed PCM
Number one in my opinion though is studio support plain and simple these are all Blu exclusive studios: Columbia Studio, Disney/ Touchstone, Warner Brother as of June 1,08,Lions Gate, Starz, Anchor Bay I am sure I'm missing some.

Brothers, huh?

"He believes it is the better format because of extras and HDI menus."

Aw well, that really is just an excuse. If he knows about technical stuff like "HDi" menues, then he prolly knows about all the relevant stuff as well.

Let me, as a deeply purple person, who loves both red and blu the same, give you this advise:

Donīt try to make "his" format look bad and give him the feeling, he was an idiot for chosing it or whatever. A lot of this stuff is on a personal, emotional level and you only get him angry with the "my stuff is better than your stuff" approach. Instead show him, that blu is great. Show him some great films, like the Pixar stuff if heīs into that. Try to get him to be purple, but donīt try to get him to abandon his HD DVD gear. If he choses to do so himself, thatīs another thing.

Maybe give him a Blu-ray as a present, even if he doesnīt have a player yet. He WILL be curious, believe me. I bought my first Blu-ray before i had decided on a player and that thing FORCED me to buy the hardware....

All the talk about technical specs and menus aside, the fact is that HD-DVD is on the way out and Blu-ray will be *the* HD format before much longer.

That sounds right..... if he truly believes HD DVD is better, you're probably not going to convince him otherwise, but he should understand that hardware with no accompanying software is going to be essentially usesless (keep in mind I am purple, but I couldn't wait for certain titles)

Beside anything on the technical side, "Blu-ray" is simply a better name.
