The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Blu-ray

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Blu-ray Review

My copy from Foxconnect.com arrived today and since the only thread for this is in the Wishlist, I thought I'd start one.

Specs on the back cover list the video as AVC @36MBPS, 103 minutes, 2.35:1 AR and 50GB disc. Audio is listed as English DTS Master Audio and French DTS, with English hearing impaired and Spanish & French subtitles. But they don't tell the whole story - from the disc menu audio options are:

English DTS MA, Director's Commentary, French, Portuguese, Italian, German, Castellano (Spanish), Magyar, Polish, Thai & Turkish.

There are subtitle options for all the above languages plus Chinese, Japanese (Asian language characters were displayed twice which I can't read so I'm guessing Mandarin & Japanese), and Dutch.

Like most recent MGM releases, there is not Main Menu, when the disc is inserted the movie begins playing. To access audio/subtitle, scene selection, and special features press the pop-up menu button on the remote.

Extra features: Birth of a Queen, Tidbits from the Set, The Bus from Blooperville, Deleted scenes, and Trailers.

Back of the cover is marked Region A but I tested it on a player set to Region B and it loads and plays just fine on a Region B player.

Watched it last night on my 110" projector screen tonight and PQ & AQ are excellent, I'd give it 4/5. I think the movie is very funny, great acting, wonderful scenes of the Australian outback, and an all around great story. But I'm not sure the real Duke would like it.

Back of the cover is marked Region A and unfortunately I can't test Region B right now. I recently upgraded the firmware on Oppo player and it seems to have reset it to Region A and I can't get it back to Region B. I'll have to open the case and unplug the mod kit to reset it, and I don't have time for that until tomorrow. When I get the player back to Region B I'll test Priscilla and confirm if it's Region B friendly.

I tested a few scenes on my 37" TV and the picture quality looks very good. I'm going to watch it on my 110" projection screen tonight and will post my thoughts. I think the movie is very funny, great acting, wonderful scenes of the Australian outback, and an all around great stroy. But I'm not sure The Duke would like it.
great little Aussie film, the amazing thing is they got these straight guys to play such campy roles.

Sad that Bill Hunter passed away a few weeks back.

I hope "To Wong Foo: Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar" gets the Blu treatment

Just finished watching it. I'd forgotten how good this movie is. This is not the best it's looked & sounded since DVD, this is the best since it was in theaters.

Thanks! I will order it right away.

I think one of the Asian languages is Japanese as it is set to be released soon.

I see this has the audio commentary, but are the other special features from the "Extra Frills Edition" DVD still there? Birth of a Queen Featurette; Never-Before-Seeen Deleted Scenes; Tidbits from the Set; The Bus from Blooperville Outakes; Frocks, Frills and Fotos Still Gallery; Original Theatrical Trailer; "and More!"

I wish they'd kept the slipcover and pink case from the DVD edition:

I'm not much for extra features so I forgot to list them. Not trusting the back cover, from the pop-up menu: Birth of a Queen, Tidbits from the Set, The Bus from Blooperville, Deleted scenes, and Trailers.

My DVD sure didn't look that your pic, it looked pretty much like the BD cover. Must have been an older release, it was also non-anamorphic. Sent it in last week in a Warner DVD2Blu order.

I have my order in. This is one of those films which I've wished for on Blu but didn't think it would happen. Especially LOVE Guy Pearce in this. Glad to hear about excellent PQ/AQ.

Same thoughts here. I will definitely give this a rent in the near future and possibly buy in time. Excellent movie. And yeah, Hunter did the "dependable, heart of gold" types with great conviction. RIP.

Just received my BD copy from Amazon today and I cannot bring up the Menu?
Cannot access any special features?

Is any one else having a problem accessing the Menu on the Blu-ray disc?

The Movie just begins playing and pressing the Menu button displays a red cross circle.
Pressing Info/Display shows 2 Titles, again selecting Title 2 displays a red cross circle.

I'm so excited about this getting a decent treatment. It would have been nice if it were the full Aussie cut (I have a OZ DVD and it has a few more scenes like "How Trumpet Got his Name." Yeah, I know it's in the "deleted scenes," but it's nice when it's put back in.)

Also missing that's in the OZ DVD is the documentary "Ladies, Please" about the real-life drag queens that inspired the characters... Here's a shot of my DVD cover:

I'm still super excited.

Add me to the list: RIP Bill Hunter.

Typical of Fox, the Stills Gallery was dropped.

[Just got back from (my first trip to) Oz. Unfortunately didn't make it to Kings Canyon as a fire required closure of the section of Luritja Road needed to get there.]

I got my copy today, the disc is good without any scratches and all but when i played it, the standard warning notice, fox video intro and FBI warning played, then it stopped. Can't watch the movie at all. This is region A and my player is region A too, my player firmware is up to date and i never had any problems playing all other blurays i bought. I wonder what is the problem.

Zeejia, you need to check/post to the owners' thread for your particular BD player here and at AVS Forum (and, based simply on my years' of experience, there will likely be more discussion at the latter site's thread).

My copy of this BD plays flawlessly. Check the actual disc and make sure it has no scratch marks or greasy finger prints on it. Since you updated your firmware it should play fine. Do you have a friend who has a BD player or PS3 who can try it out for you?

Did you try to press FAST FORWARD (SCAN FORWARD) or TOP MENU the moment the FBI notice started?

Good luck. GREAT MOVIE by the way. Hugo Weaving was amazing in Priscilla. Well, he's amazing in everything he does.
