Default How prevalent are faulty discs?

Taking all the people I know, we must own well over 150 different Blu-ray titles. Here's the question, have any of you encountered faulty discs? By this time with standard DVD I would have had at least 5 to 10 movies with some kind of defect. However, no one I know has any issues with their Blu-ray movies. Sure we've had issues with our players, that a simple firmware has fixed, but not the discs themselves.

Even talking to various stores located here in Montreal no one has reported Blu-ray discs getting returned. The largest video store in Montreal, Metro Video, has never had any Blu-ray discs returned besides people returning them because it didn't work on their DVD player (yes, people can't read).

I'm sure you guys are tired of all the Paramount and Universal questions, so this may spice up your day a bit How faulty are these discs? What kind of issues have people had, etc?

Thanks in advance and keep up the great job.

The only physical problem I've heard of since day one of BD is the small run of "The Prestige" that developed spots and was promptly replaced by BVHE.

There have been a few logical problems, such as the PotC framing issue, the Stargate subtitle issue, etc. But those have nothing to do with the format directly, they're the result of a lack of mastering QC which could occur in any media.

I've got a faulty BD. Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix. It freezes in one scene and then skips to the other (if I remember correctly skips just when Umbridge is messing with the students). That's the only one.

Shot in the dark here, but is your player's firmware current? Every one of the (few) skipping issues has (eventually) disappeared after a firmware update or two.

I have a BDP-S1, FW 3.60 btw.

Well, I have a PS3 for a BD player, and has the latest firmware. So I guess I just got bad luck with my Harry Potter BD. No biggie.

I haven't encountered any faulty discs. Here's to hoping I never have the pleasure of a faulty disc.

This is my first post and would like to say HI, to everyone. So I recently purchased Sunshine, which is a pretty good movie. However, that particular blu-ray disc is corrupt. It skips in two different areas. First one is when Captain Kaneda has to go outside to fix the Icarus II. Second one is near the ending when Cassie and Capa fights with the "5th" crew member. I have the Panasonic 30k, just upgraded to version 1.3 and still skips.
Guess I have to return it to Circuit City, hopefully they have this movie in stock. So 1 out of 46 blu-ray titles I bought is defective.

Aside from my initial copy of Chronos... None.

And well, Chronos is well known as to the why.

I guess also POTC1 but well I don't care enough to bug disney about it.

You sir are either extremely lucky or I'm extremely unlucky. I own close to 1000 DVDs and I've had at least 20 or 30 defective units in that batch. I own 97 Blu-ray movies and not one of them has ever messed up. Sure I had issues with my Blu-ray player, but after a quick firmware update everything was back to normal.

The mods moved my post to a new thread here and I think that was wise because it'll be easy to guage just how defective Blu-ray discs are. Thus far, I've been extremely impressed by the overall quality of all my Blu-ray movies.

Out of about 60 blu-rays I only returned 1, Pirates Of The Carribean: COTBP - half way through the movie it just kept freezing, I had the latest firmware at the time. Brought it back, got another copy and it worked fine.

Overall, I'm very impressed - I remember when we first got a dvd player, we were constantly returning discs during the first year

Not a single issue here either...unless you want to call POTC:1's framing issue "faulty"

Question

Last Saturday, I opened my brand-new copy of "Memoirs of a Geisha" and at 2:09:00 my BDP-94HD froze. None of the controls would function. I had to unplug my player to remove the disc. I have the latest firmware installed. I experimented with this disc last night and it played fine through the point in question.

I have had (2) issues with Netflix BD's. Planet Earth, Disc 3 would not even play.
"Black Book" froze at (2) different points in the movie.

Going to go with the later [you being unlucky], since I did work IC for a retail store with a rental front [on a given week, we'd go through thousands of DVDs, and the only defects we found were the wide-spread reported ones or people with scratched discs].

What do you mean by defective?
