Default PCM stereo, PCM 5.1, DOBLY 5.1????

PCM stereo, PCM 5.1, DOBLY 5.1????

What is the difference in these three audios?

I thought the PCM stereo would only be front speakers but it uses all my speakers and sounds better than PCM 5.1. Can someone give me a quick lesson?

I tried to search but PCM is too small of a word.

PCM is an uncompressed audio format, Dolby is a highly compressed, "lossy" audio format. Stereo is two channel, 5.1 is 5 channels plus sub.

First thing's first though, how do you have your stuff hooked up?

Well as of now I just have my BD player hooked up to a Samsung HTIAB 5.1.

But in a few weeks when I move into my new house I will have a 6.1 system with the marantz 7001 receiver with phase tech speakers & sub. Which everything will be hooked up via HDMI.

Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated.

So I'm assuming that you have an optical cable from the BD player to the receiver?

If this is the case, you won't get PCM 5.1 . . . only PCM stereo. PCM 5.1 is only capable of being transferred via HDMI. Are you saying that PCM stereo sounds better than Dolby Digital? This is a pretty common observation, as the sound is uncompressed vs. compressed . . . some people find the trade off of multi-channel to uncompressed stereo to be worth it.

Once you get your new setup, you'll be able to enjoy everything the way it's meant to be. It'll make a big difference

I was saying that PCM stereo sounded better than the PCM 5.1 track.
But as you said since I dont have audio via HDMI, that would be why I assume.

Thanks for helping

Yeah, if you try to run PCM 5.1 through optical you will not get it, it may even default to Dolby Digital.

Just curious, what are you watching that has both a PCM stereo and PCM 5.1 track?

*cough* Justin Timberlake BD *cough*

LOL.

One thing I also noticed was when i played the PCM stereo track
with RCA connection it sounded better than with optical connection.
Why would that be?
