It reminded me of Shaun of the Dead in the sense that it combined horror with comedy. Whereas Shaun of the Dead was more comedy than horror, The Host is more horror than comedy. So if that sounds appealing and you don't mind subtitles I defienetely recommend this movie.

It's like and Asian rip-off of Lake Placid lol.

Not seen Lake Placid but I doubt it's even remotely a rip-off.

There were social and national identity issues that was on display. It's not a gore fest or a monster movie either. It has a weird vibe to it. It is entertaining because of all the mix of elements though.

Some of the CGI shots were good and some weren't. This is not a big budget movie.

Any clue if this will be a no region/all region disc? If so, I am so buying it.

This movie is brilliant. I just loved it. You may blast it for maybe it's below par special effects but the story makes up for it.

A cheap Asian rip off of Lake Placid? Please. They may have creatures from a body of water but The Host leads because of these two magnificent words: Character Development.

Big news here in Korea, where it was produced.

It's fun in the beginning, but drags on. The way the monster appears is what made me laugh my tail off. As I mentioned in the other thread, two of the foreign actors in that got deported for not obtaining the proper work visas. I used to attend a singles group with the guy who plays the soldier in the beginning. He got deported, but not sure if he was allowed to return or not.

Something like 16 million Koreans watched that movie -- pretty much half of the country by now, I think.

My girlfriend hates the awful graphics when the monster dies. She said Koreans were talking on the internet about how embarrassed they were by the graphics in that ending. Actually, I think the graphics were outsourced to a company in New Zealand, if memory serves.

As you will learn, to be a foreign actor in Korea, you just have to look white, have the proper visa (or be willing to work illegally and risk deportation) and know the right people.

I was supposed to be in a Korean movie called Taiphoon (spelling?) two years ago, but they changed the shooting schedule, and it conflicted with my work hours.

Watch that movie, and you'll see scenes that I see each and every day (minus the monster).

Weta Workshop created and scanned the maquette. Using that data, The Orphanage (L.A. based) created the CGI and other effects, plus comp work. The on-set model was created by John Cox's Creature Workshop.

Whoever put the fake fire on the thing really screwed the pooch.

By the way, if you want to see a much better movie, see "200 Pounds Beauty" with Kim Ah Jung, my favorite Korean actress. It's a fun date movie. She gets plastic surgery to remove a lot of weight and become gorgeous.

I'm looking forward to this release and will definitely be getting it. It's about a week away now.

Has anyone seen the "game" they set up? It's better than the normal shockwave hit the spacebar and arrows game.

I wanted to see 'The Host', but didn't really play around here. I like Asian horror/Godzilla type films. I'm sure I'll love it. The trailer looked good. "The Host" is one of those films where not everyone will like.
