I have a question regarding turntable sound from a receiver. I currently have Onkyo TX-NR575 receiver and a Denon DP-300F turntable. The turntable is 12 years old and the receiver is 6 years old. I currently have to have the sound cranked at 45-50 in order to hear the music. Is there anything I can do to make the sound better and at lower volume? It hasn't really bothered me that much, but now that I've got the green marble vinyl of R.E.M.'s UP, I would like to work on this. My speaker set up is a 7 speaker Sonance system with true speakers in the ceiling. I will take and post it shortly. Thanks in advance for any help.

I believe I do. I'd have to check and see to be sure.

Ok. I will try that. It won't be until tomorrow evening, as I have a Liz Phair concert tonight. Currently, I have the pre-amp off and and running things through the phono amp/section on my receiver. I will see what I need to do to switch it back to the CD selection on my receiver. I believe that is how the receiver handles the signal when the pre-amp is on. I will check tomorrow to be sure. Thanks for the help so far.

I had some time tonight to try this out. When I had the preamp on the turntable turned to the on position, it sounded like the vinyl was being scratched and I couldn't really hear the music. It was sort of static sounding, too. I think I have to hook things back up on the receiver in the right area to use the preamp on my turntable. I just don't remember how. I hope this all makes sense.

If you want to set it to ON, you can use the PHONO input, as you're using the Denon's pre-amp. Don't forget the GROUND. It's worth switching to Stereo mode with your Onkyo, audio can be lower than surrounds when in Stereo mode, but it might be worth checking the stylus. |

I think it may be time for a new stylus. I tried playing my green marble vinyl of R.E.M.'s up using the built-in preamp on the turntable, but it just sounded worse. Soft, muddy, and hard to hear. I have switched it back to using the preamp on my receiver and it is better, but I'm still having issues with the sound having to be turned up louder to hear things.
However, I have it hooked into the phono input. I think when I use the turntable's preamp and run it through the phono input on the receiver it gets all muffled and staticky. So, I usually have to run it through the CD input. If I want to use the preamp on the receiver, I have to run it through the phono input I will test these out tonight and report back. However, I have to be careful when doing so as the more I move the receiver the HDMI cord for the 4K player keeps cutting out. And I end up losing picture and sound. Tomorrow is movie night so I can't have the 4K player video signal going out on me. |

If you did, I would try another stylus, and inspect your current one, if you see two grooves either side of the tip it's due a change (the standard one isny great). Also if it's not too much of a faff make sure you haven't got any funky treble settings with your AVR. |

I'm pretty certain the equalizer switch was turned off, but I can double-check. I can also check for any funky treble settings with my AVR. I just don't know how to. Sorry. As for the stylus, I think I just going to get a new one. Especially if the two things above don't fix the problem. Thanks for all the help.
