The Equalizer switch is at the rear of the unit under the platter, you'd need to remove the turntable sheet and spin the platter to gain access to it. If you want to use the AVR's amp, you set it to OFF, and you need to select an input other than PHONO.

If you want to set it to ON, you can use the PHONO input, as you're using the Denon's pre-amp. Don't forget the GROUND.

It's worth switching to Stereo mode with your Onkyo, audio can be lower than surrounds when in Stereo mode, but it might be worth checking the stylus.

Well, that was an abject failure. The turntable can only be hooked up to the phono input when using the preamp on the receiver. I tried every other input and nothing worked. In addition to that, the record I played now was sounding harsh and so bass-heavy that it hurt to listen to it. I got such a splitting headache I thought I might puke. I think it is time for a new stylus or even a new turntable. The stylus is one of those standard Denon ones. It's lasted 7 years and serves me well, but the sound it's sending back isn't top-of-the-line.
