I am having a very annoying problem with the picture that is put out from blu-rays and dvds on my ps3. The colors of the picture are very staticy, some movies worse than others, even on blu rays. I never had this problem when I had it hooked up to my projector, which is 1080i, but as I am soon to be moving and have my projector packed away, I am using my samsung 24" monitor, which is 1080p. The minute I hooked it up to my monitor, I saw the staticy colors. I know blu ray is not supposed to be like this, and I don't see how the picture could be worse moving from 1080i to 1080p. So I am wondering if someone could shed some light on why this is happening. I tried changing the settings on my ps3. I set the rgb for full and turned on the super white, after reading on gamespot that this could help graphics in games. I have noticed a small difference, but I still get the color distortion when watching movies. The only other thing I can think of is my cable I am using. I am using a no name hdmi to dvi cable and am wondering if that can be causing the problem. I have ordered a monster hdmi to dvi cable from amazon and am waiting for that to arrive in the mail, hoping that will fix the problem. My brother recently got his own ps3 and is having the same problem on his 61" Samsung dlp, and is very annoyed with it as well. He is also using a no name hdmi cable and so he too is hoping to see an improvement when I get my monster cable so he will know if that is what he should do. I am totally clueless why this is happening so if anyone has any advice on the subject, I would be glad to hear it, as I was very pleased with my ps3 back when I had my projector up and the picture was perfect. My brother and I are both big playstation fans and so this is a little disappointing for us especially since I was just in the process of introducing my brother to blu ray, and unfortunately am not doing too good on with the bad picture, I know it is not a problem with the blu ray and am sure its either a setting or a connection problem so I hope someone can help. Thank you and happy holidays.

Second, if your brother has had issues with PS3 on his 61 inch DLP, why would you need to show off Blu Ray to him? Would he not already know since he owns PS3? Third, I just don't get it... |

What do you mean by "staticy" colors? Is the coloring slightly off or tinged (i.e. faces don't look normal, all colors muted)? I just want to make sure I understand the issue on this before offering any suggestions.
As always, make sure cables a securely in the slot. Does the problem occur during game play as well, or just Blu-ray movies? |

To finalfantasy
I am using a 24" 1080p because that is what I use for my computer. Like I said, my primary display is my projector, which I have a 106" screen. But like I said that is packed away as I am trying to sell my house. I am sorry if you question me still wanting to use my ps3 the only way I can. And my brother just recently got a ps3 and his 61" TV he got even more recently with his christmas bonus so yes, I am introducing him to blu-ray. Yes he has heard of it, but he has never really had an opportunity to see it other than a couple of visits to my house. I am sorry if I bewildered you with what I posted, but if all you can post are criticisms and no real suggestions, why even post. To slec I am not sure how to describe the color distortion. It is as if I am looking at a screen of static over the movie that has blended with the colors. Everything is still viewable, it's not like I can't tell what things are, but the colors are just really staticy, almost fuzzy. That is the best I can describe it. If that helps and you can give some advise, then thank you, but to people like finalfantasy, if you don't have any useful suggestions, maybe it would be better if you just keep your thoughts to yourself. I am just a loyal blu-ray fan looking for some help. |

It comes down to probably 3 things. The cable itself, the HDMI output on the PS3, or the HDMI input on the TV. PS3's hardly have a problem so the problem may lay with the cable or the TV. Try using another cable or the existing cable plugged into another device (such as DirecTV) to your TV. Then try the same cable or different cable with the PS3 into a different HDMI input on the TV or another TV.
You have to forgive the OP, there are so many trolls and PS3 bashers that come to this forum and post BS problems with their PS3's as new members. Also most everyone who has a long posting history, and makes great contributions to this site, that have a PS3, has never brought up a problem. The only problems ever brought up are by new members. So it just seems strange... Anywho,,,if you really do have a problem, good luck and welcome to the forum. Last edited by Zaphod; 12-30-2007 at 09:42 PM. |

I assure you that I am no troll. I had an xbox 360, in fact I had three different ones, two of which died on me and I had to take them back to Costco. I finally decided that I didn't want to deal with it anymore and sold the third one along with all of the accessories I had on ebay. I get more use out of my ps3 than any electronic equipment I have in my house, and a big plus is that it has never died on me. I do not think the problem is with the ps3. Like I said, I am getting a new cable and am hoping it will fix the problem. I have also been a blu ray fan ever since my first one I saw.
To crackinhedz No, the picture is not that bad. Like I said you can still see everything clearly. It's just back ground colors and especially dark colors, like skies and vegetation and stuff like that is pretty fuzzy. I am sorry if I sounded like I was ps3 bashing, because I am not. I would just like to get this fixed so I can get back to enjoying the full potential of the ps3 and blu-ray. The model number of my samsung is 245bw, and I would conclude it is that, but it does it on my brother's tv as well. I really don't see there being a problem with both of our tvs or ps3s, so what I am concluding is, since we each got our cables from the same store at the same time, is maybe ours were a bad batch. I will update if the new cable fixes the problem. Thank you. |

well, cables could play the problem but is highly unlikely. Do you have a link to where you got them?

Might be good to make sure you are outputting from the PS3 in in 1080. They default to 480, and it sounds like your tv may be stretching the picture to compensate (fill the screen). Make sure 1080i and 1080p are checked on the video settings......

I got the new cable and hooked it up and there was no difference. However, I calibrated my monitor for the first time with Ratatouille and it made a big difference. Thank you crackinhedz, this seems to have done the trick. Thank you to all for your help.

Hello everyone. I am looking for some help. I just purchased a PS3 yesterday, pretty excited about it. I bought 300 to go along with it. But when I tried to watch the movie, it wasn't playing in all it's HD glory.
Here is what I have: Samsung LN-T3242H which supports 720p and 1080i I tried using the component cable and HDMI cable. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
