Disney Toy Story 5

It’s officially happening!

Quote:

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that three animated sequels for Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia are in the works on today’s Q1 earnings call.

“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy story, Frozen and Zootopia. we’ll have more to share about these productions soon. but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises,” said Iger today.

The news came in the wake of some sour news, read a $5.5 billion cost savings by the conglomerate across all divisions and 7K jobs getting cut at Disney.

The last three installments of each of those animated franchises were huge global grossing hits on the big screen, read Frozen 2 ($1.45 billion), Pixar’s Toy Story 4 ($1.07 billion) and Zootopia ($1.02 billion).

Franchise sequels work, duh. Unfortunately, Disney’s original films of late have been low grossers, i.e. Strange World tanked with under $74M WW and was fast-tracked onto Disney+ close to a month after its theatrical release. Encanto, released at Thanksgiving 2021, did just over $256M WW, and only $96M stateside, but it was at a time when families were just making their way back to theaters after Covid. The pic was a huge hit on Disney+ reportedly.

I'm hoping it's more of a spin off than a true sequel. I think every Toy Story is a 10/10, but the series has always centered around Woody and I don't think there's any story left where he's concerned that would be worthwhile (which some would argue was a problem with the last one). A movie about Bonnie's other toys though, that could be good.

Eh. I guess. TS4 was a fine, fine entry in the franchise, but I still maintain that TS3 (had they left it there) is my absolute favorite third chapter of any trilogy, ever. And it was an absolute perfect ending and sendoff to the characters.

To this day, it's the only movie I've seen (as an adult) that's gotten me to tear up multiple times (in the span of about 15 minutes... you probably can guess the two scenes). It even got me again on my latest re-watch about 6 months ago. Just the first one, though. The second scene didn't quite get me this time.

Anyways, this could be good. Just wish they could let it go and focus on creating something new for fans that's just as excellent and memorable as Toy Story has been.

“A great example of how we’re leaning into our brands and franchises” LOL, he straight up admitted it like it was a good thing! Too funny.

I absolutely adore Toy Story, but they were really pushing it with the fourth one and I’m just not sure what else is left to say. By the time this fifth one comes out the series will have spent 15-20 years trying to end, since the third and fourth (heck, even the second one to some degree) had definitive “make you cry” endings. Can’t be worse than Lightyear, though. That movie was awful and I’m sorry it’s associated with this great series.

Toy Story 4 was awesome and just as good as the other sequels. The hate for it feels forced because 20-30 year olds put the ending of 3 on a pedestal for being “cathartic” and wanted it preserved for themselves. 4 was a better ending for Woody. There should be more time in between 4 and 5 to make it like a reunion movie, but I suppose they can just do a time jump.

I’m with everyone saying all four films are great…but I will never not be skeptical when they announce another sequel thinking this’ll be the one that’ll push it too far.

I thought 4 was good enough but far from the first 3. However I actually think that this could be interesting if the plot is about technology making toys outdated.

Also, wouldn't be surprised if they swiftly undo the emotional goodbye ending of TS4, the same way the end of Mando season 2 was undone.

They should go the Scream route and call it:

Toy Story.

It’s not like a widely hated movie, but there’s certainly more negativity toward it than the other ones, and it gets looked down on as the “cash-grab” sequel.

Toy Story didn't need a 4th movie it sure as hell doesn't need a 5th movie.

The First 3 were perfect.

Disney is running out of good new ideas.
Hope it won't keep ruining the legend again and again.

Toy Story 4 was good, but it just couldn't measure up to the greatness of the first 3 films. Still, it was better than 90% of other animated films being released these days.

However, I'm not sure where they go for a 5th film. Without both Woody and Buzz in it, would it even be a true Toy Story film to the fans? Not to mention several of the other toys from the first 3 films weren't given much to do in the 4th film, and the new ones aren't as memorable.

Sadly Pixar was one of the few divisions of Disney still focusing on original films, but with this news plus Inside Out 2 being announced a while back, I think they will be forced to focus on sequels and spinoffs like every other Disney department.
