Arrow Sucker Punch Review Thread (Spoilers)

Jamie Chung Talks Sucker Punch: “It’s 300 With a Female Cast”

[QUOTE]While promoting Sorority Row, actress Jamie Chung has been talking about Zack Snyder’s upcoming film Sucker Punch, in which she is featured alongside Emily Browning, Jenna Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish and supporting players Carla Gugino and Jon Hamm. We know a few things about the film: Browning plays Baby Doll, a girl confined to a mental institution by her stepfather. She escapes into outlandish, violent fantasy to deal with her predicament. Chung gets a bit more specific, though, and her comments follow the break. Are they spoilers? Not really, if you’ve been reading what we’ve covered so far.

ComingSoon has the roundtable talk, in which Chung reiterates that each of the girls cast in the film have one character in the real world and another in fantasy. The core is this:

Quote:
[Baby Doll] goes into these fever dreams to escape. Somehow her alternate reality affects her reality, just like in ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ All of the characters in her fever dreams are from her real life. And the girls plan to escape and they come up with a plan and things go terribly wrong and it really does affect her reality.
The ‘things going terribly wrong’ sections will likely be seriously violent, and the stunt team Snyder used for 300 are on board, which we already knew. Chung says the film “puts 300 to shame! It’s the same stunt guys, 87Eleven. Damon (Caro) and Logan, the trainer. But it really is ‘300′ but with a female cast.” That being the case, I’m trying to figure out how this will make a PG-13. Not because of the level of violence, but because other reports have said that Baby Doll envisions at least part of the asylum as a brothel, and she’s trying to escape some level of sexual threat. The MPAA is fine with rating violent stuff PG-13, but when sex is brought into the equation everything changes.[/QUOTE

Mad Men's Jon Hamm Also Joins the Sucker Punch Cast

Zack Snyder certainly had his fair share of problems early on wrangling a cast for his latest project Sucker Punch. Amanda Seyfried was supposed to play the lead Baby Doll, then dropped out only to be replaced later by Emily Browning and not long after that both Emma Stone and Evan Rachel Wood left the project due to "scheduling conflicts." Now THR tells us that a bit of good fortune has finally been sent Snyder's way in the form of "Mad Men" actor Jon Hamm being the first male to join the, thus far, all-female cast that also includes Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone and Carla Gugino most recently.

While we know Hamm's character goes by the awesome name High Roller, all other details are being kept under tight wraps. And it's not easy to figure out what his role might entail with a movie described as "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns." The only story details known about Sucker Punch are that it follows a girl named Baby Doll when she is banished to a mental institution by her step-father who has intentions for her to be labotomized in five days. While imprisoned, she imagines herself in a fantasy world where she and her friends must steal five objects in order to help her escape before a sinister man has her way with her.

Zack Snyder's got a great track record so far, and if there's one person who can help visualize this strange story, it's him. I'm just hoping that all the aforementioend casting woes were sincerely results of scheduling conflicts and that this production isn't doomed from the start. But after shooting what was once called an impossible-to-adapt graphic novel (Watchmen) I'm confident that he's got as many tricks up his sleeve as Vanessa Hudgens has nude pictures. Sucker Punch will be released in March of 2011 by Warner Brothers.

As excited as I am for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch to get underway, we still really don't know that much about it. I mean, we've got the basic premise (that an institutionalized girl retreats into an alternative reality in order to try and escape the mental hospital), but as for exactly what takes place and how it'll all look, that still remains a secret (though I'd really love to read the script). Abbie Cornish, who plays one of the four "wild-child" friends of the lead character Baby Doll in the movie, revealed just a bit more about what's going on (via Emily Browning Online). And from the sounds of it, it'll be pretty twisted and quite awesome.

Cornish plays Sweetpea, the leader of the group of friends that includes Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, and Jena Malon. "The film is a dream in a way," she explains. "It operates on three levels. A reality, then a sub-reality where the psych ward world shifts into this strange high-roller's brothel. Then there's this dream world where it goes into these crazy action sequences that are totally removed from time and space." As Neo would say - whoa! Although Sweetpea is in the same mental hospital, in the dream world "all of a sudden she becomes a crazy killing machine and she's decked out in a really cool outfit." Badass!

And if you think there will be a hell of a lot of fighting, you're right. Snyder is even putting all five of the girls through Spartan-like fight training and conditioning up in Vancouver at the moment. "Sometimes I forget I'm an actor. We're training so hard." How hard? She said their five-day-a-week morning is "doing martial fighting, swords and choreography - just kicking butt with guns and everything imaginable. And then we do a training session in the afternoon. It's like being a stunt person, really, not an actor at all." Five beautiful women all doing hardcore fight training? I'm in. We'll keep you updated on all the latest from Vancouver.

-----------------------------------------------
I hadn't heard of this project, but they are describing it as Alice in Wonderland with Machine Guns. Snyder is really good with the visuals so I imagine it'll be quite interesting...

Quote:
So what does the visionary director who makes something incredible out of what was unfilmmable go on to do next? How about a movie described as "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns" called Sucker Punch? We've heard about this before - Zack Snyder announced it way back in 2007 during all the 300 hype. It's set in the 1950's and follows a girl who while in a mental institution imagines an alternative reality to hide from the pain, and in that world, begins planning her escape. It's a bit more complicated, obviously, and was co-written by Snyder himself and Steve Shibuya, and will definitely be Snyder's next project.

These updated details come from Collider, who just finished interviewing him today, as I'm set to talk with him in a few minutes. Snyder confirmed that Sucker Punch is definitely his next project (in addition to the animated Guardians of Ga'Hoole) and that he's going to start shooting in the fall for a release in March of 2011 (the exact same schedule he's been on since 300). Sucker Punch will feature an all girl cast and is going to be an R rated action extravaganza of sorts. If you're not yet excited for this, now's the time to change that!
