2.35:1 is formatted to the dvd or blu-ray disc not the player. if you watch a movie and there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen that's 2.35:1 if you don't see bars it's 1:85:1(or to be more precise 1.75-1.85:1)

yeah but that's the original aspect ratio used in movie theaters. there is a thread ,which i'm too lazy to search for, that lists all the 1.85:1 blu-rays. off the top of my head, Superbad, sleepy hollow, hollow man, edward scissorhands, etc.....

1.75-1.85:1 = no black bars, a full widescreen image 2.35-2.45:1 = black bars on top and bottom |

I worked at BB when widescreen TVs first came out, and DVD was just starting to explode. I always told people to do the math. 16:9 works out to 1.78:1, which roughly fits the 1.85:1 aspect ratio that a lot of movies have. 2.35:1 is wider so you will have the black bars. If you want to eliminate them, most TVs have a Zoom function so you don't see them. However, you lose information on the sides of the picture. Set your PS3 for 16:9

what type of tv do you have?
you are going to want to set it to "just scan" or 1:1 or something that will show everything in its native ratio and resolution. do what the guy above said with your ps3, your movies should now play in the correct aspect ratio. If you are seeing black bars you should be fine. Last edited by stockstar1138; 02-12-2008 at 05:27 AM. |
