Wasn't there a rumor that DS9 was going to get the TNG treatment w/ a BD release in 2023? I don't know if I believe it, but it would be something I'd like to see. Just as long as they don't feel the need to change/update effects. DS9 > B5, TNG, VOY, ENT...

From what I've heard/read, the DVD is still the best quality version out there. The rumours of a proper HD upgrade seem to be continuous with nothing actually happening. It's a big and expensive project to undertake. I keep hoping to be surprised by good news.

They would have to update the effects, they were all created by computer by then. You'd have massive drops in quality for all vfx scenes. The X-Files remaster is like this. But like the TNG remaster I imagine they'd take the utmost care with it when and if they do remaster it.

DS9 is the only Star Trek series I do not own on disc. I think the SD set is $80 on Amazon, but since it's SD I may as well watch it first on P+ to gauge quality.
EDIT - I also do not own Voayger on disc either. That one is also in SD and runs about $80 on Amazon, as well. Last edited by cheez avenger; 12-11-2022 at 04:42 AM. |

Pretty sure I've read multiple times that the TNG blu ray restorations didn't sell near enough to justify the cost and DS9 wouldn't be worth it. Love it if that changed but it's about money first and foremost.

That is correct. Regardless of what some folks think, the studios do it for money, not "for the fans" or altruistic purposes. |

It's not possible at all, it's going to be the exact same version that's been streaming for years everywhere else. Like others have said, in the end it's a business about making money. Nobody is footing the bill for DS9 to be redone in HD because they would never earn there money back, let alone make a profit.
As far as the DVDs go, I was able to get DS9 and Voyager in a BG1G1 sale at Deep Discount a while back, so they were not too bad. |

It's not just a straight remastering process either. Each episode will require all new post-production.
The unfortunate reality is that a BD release would be softer than soft and there's no financial incentive to upgrade the Paramount version. The best option is to invest in the DVD boxset. |

We’re talking here like the current SD transfers are the best there is without a complete restoration when what’s currently available is still a HUGE step down from what we’d get with a native resolution transfer of the original mastering tapes. If they’re not going to do a restoration I would settle for that.

The first few seasons would probably benefit from a more modern transfer, mind, because they look to be composite tape source. I dunno about NTSC, but there was a PAL decoder developed c.2002 that was significantly better than older ones, meaning colour noise and moiré was significantly improved when they used it. The latter ones look component (and sharper), so don't need NTSC decoded. It'd still seem a waste though when we have lovely 35mm just sitting in a vault. |

It’s because what we have at the moment looks like it was a VHS sourced transfer of the 480i masters which is losing a few generations of quality. Those mastering tapes will still have a lot more detail on them when they are transferred at their native resolution. Which is easy to do and it’s a super cheap option vs scanning 35mm film.
