The year is 1991. Max and Albert are two pioneers about to embark on the scientific experiment of a lifetime, volunteering to be the first ever cryogenically frozen humans. If all goes well they'll wake up in 3 years to fame and fortune. Luckily for Max and Albert the experiment is a success...until they find out that the year is now 2044, a global war has taken place, the M-Bomb has wiped out all male species on Earth and reproduction is handled via test tubes in a lab. The Congress of the World Women's League is in complete control and they're the only two men alive! What seems like a dream scenario soon turns into a nightmare when they realize males have been demonized and 'The League' may be keeping a sinister secret. They'll have to convince The League that they're ready to serve in the old ways of reproduction or lose their manhood in the process of 'Naturalization'!

SEXMISSION is a side-splitting satire from Polish director Juliusz Machulski that straddles the genre lines of sci-fi and sex-romp in equal measure! Critical and skewering of both chauvinist fears about the extremes of feminism and the Polish government's fallible attempt to pull the wool over its citizen's eyes, it features a cast of Polish all-stars from Jerzy Stuhr (Dekalog) and Olgierd Łukaszewicz (Interrogation) to Boguslawa Pawelec (Blind Chance) and Dorota Stalinska (Ga-ga: Glory to the Heroes). Never seen it before, but it's been on my radar. Jerzy Stuhr as one of the leads is a definite plus.

My wife isn't really into films, certainly not as much as me, but as soon as I showed her this, she got quite excited and wanted me to order it. She's Polish, and said this is a hilarious film and one that's as much part of the Polish culture as Home Alone is (which they show on Polish TV every Christmas).

Thematically, it reminds me of QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE (1958), with a race of women discovering men and imprisoning them.

This was shown in the 80's in the UK as part of Channel 4's "Red Triangle" season - whereby on certain nights they'd show controversial or explicit films which would have a red triangle in the corner so people turning in might know straight away it had "special" content in it and might want to switch away immediately! Obvs to most of us it was great that C4 were highlighting which films were gonna be interesting!

The other films in the season were Sebastian, Pixote, Themrock and maybe one or two others I can't rem ...

I rem me and my work colleague talking about it next day - it was really funny, with lots of nudity! I have a Polish DVD Mediabook and a blu-ray from a few years ago, but well up for this release!

Edit: I had to come back and edit this post - reminding myself about the red triangle season made me look up the season information on the web and I found out SexMission was NOT part of the red triangle season! Could have sworn it was. Red triangle season was 1986-87, SexMission was broadcast on C4 in 1989. Me and my work colleague both saw it and talked about it next day, and I only knew him from 1987-89 ...

Apparently it's mostly a port of a different international restoration (also cropped). Disappointing, indeed.

So hyped. It's sort of like Mel Brooks comedy crossed with Polanski, very much like a lost classic you never saw before. I think it will catch on with western audiences.

In case of that movie cropped also means censored :P
And since it doesnt even look especially good PQ-wise, I am staying with my old DVD.

This was a blind buy I got back in January, the title intrigued me and reading the premise sold me on it. What a blast of a movie! I really enjoyed it, the humor was great and would probably be frowned upon by todays cinematic standards(which to me makes it all the better)

Glad I picked this one up, it shot up there being one of my favorite foreign films in my collection.
