United Kingdom A Touch of Evil (Masters of Cinema) question

Good evening

I'm going to watch a Touch of Evil and having never seen it before I'm unsure which version to watch. There is no less than 5 versions on the MOC blu ray release.

What's people's desired version ?

Thanks

Reconstructed version in 1.85:1 if you want the closest to what Welles intended.

Reconstructed version in 1.33:1. I enjoy the movie more in this ratio.

I agree. I watched it in both and personally I prefer it in 1.33:1.

I'm a long-time Welles fan and collector, and I can testify that there is no simple answer to your question; it'll tie you in knots, if you let it.

Certain shots seem to work best in open matte, while others work best tight up in widescreen.

The 1998 reconstruction has much to recommend it, but do not dismiss the 1958 studio cut out of hand. Both have their problems; both their positives.

The studio cut has a certain rhythm to the editing that I find lacking in the reconstruction, and so, for this reason, it is the studio cut that I chose to screen, a few months back, for my girlfriend's first viewing of the picture. If memory serves, I went for the Academy ratio.

There really isn't a right or wrong answer to your question. Just dive in and enjoy whichever version you choose.

For anyone who bought the new 4K release from Eureka's MOC: is the sleeve in the actual plastic case showing a different artwork than the box?

Yes, it's the same as their earlier Blu-ray release.

Thanks!

I was actually happy they kept the original design. I personally love it!

I like the artwork myself, especially on the slipbox. In fact, that (and the better encode) is what prompted me to get it (though I do like the original poster art on Kino's edition as well)!
