Good evening
I'm going to watch a Touch of Evil and having never seen it before I'm unsure which version to watch. There is no less than 5 versions on the MOC blu ray release. What's people's desired version ? Thanks Last edited by BigNickUK; 11-01-2023 at 05:48 PM. |

I'm a long-time Welles fan and collector, and I can testify that there is no simple answer to your question; it'll tie you in knots, if you let it.
Certain shots seem to work best in open matte, while others work best tight up in widescreen. The 1998 reconstruction has much to recommend it, but do not dismiss the 1958 studio cut out of hand. Both have their problems; both their positives. The studio cut has a certain rhythm to the editing that I find lacking in the reconstruction, and so, for this reason, it is the studio cut that I chose to screen, a few months back, for my girlfriend's first viewing of the picture. If memory serves, I went for the Academy ratio. There really isn't a right or wrong answer to your question. Just dive in and enjoy whichever version you choose. |
