Default Das Boot on UHD?

Anyone know if there are plans to release Das Boot in UHD? I just watched the BD last night and forgot how incredible this movie is. Easily my favorite submarine movie of all time.

None that I am aware of. The current focus is on the TV series Das Boot. The issue with Das Boot is that it requires a comprehensive restoration to do a UHD-BD release that people would want to buy. They can scan/clean-up the original film and release it, but it wouldn't be the product that people want to buy, because it wouldn't be doing the work or the format justice. When the Director's Cut - the version considered to be the definitive one - was made, it was something akin to an EE of LOTR, with added footage and improved digital VFX and audio to make it worthy of screening in a cinema and releasing on DVD. All of that would have to be re-done for a UHD-BD release of the Director's Cut. Then you've also got the "Uncut Edition", basically the TV mini-series edit, which people might also want to see on UHD-BD and that's nearly 300 minutes. I think it's possible that we might get a new DC restoration, but if it's happening, it's under the radar at the moment.

Thanks, I really hope they invest in this movie and specially the DC cut. It won a lot of awards, and brought some attention to the German film industry.

Never seen this. I’d love to, but I’m still waiting for a US-friendly release of the miniseries version. Or I guess I could finally cave and buy a region-free player.

UHD would be ideal, of course.

You really should see it. I don't have a region free Blu Ray player and have no issues. This should play:

That’s just the director’s cut, not the miniseries version.

Ah gotcha I thought you meant you had never seen the Das Boot movie. Yeah I would love the mini series too but don't have a region free player.

Director Wolfgang Petersen left Das Boot pretty much untouched like Spielberg did with 1941 (i.e. no digital VFX) but improved the audio.

IMHO, the "definitive one" remains the mini-TV series which - much to my positive surprise - had been remastered and optimized for (German) Blu-ray release in 2015 (and has recently been reissued / repacked). However, the mini-series Blu-ray release is 'chaptered' in episodes the way it was broadcasted in the 1980's (i.e. no seamless branched version).

Regarding UHD potential I remain sceptical. All the photography was done in the real, claustrophobic and tight environment of a closed replica of a German submarine (visited the set repeatedly, it's more claustrophobic than the footage suggests!) limiting the size of cameras you could bring in.

What I try to say: I don't know if there's really that much more resolution you could get from the original negatives to justify a UHD treatment.

Thankfully, you don't need additional spatial resolution to justify an UHD release; there are plenty of other benefits that could make Das Boot look spectacular in the format.

Incidentally, the announcement of such a disc would make me explode with glee.

Would you care to elaborate?

As they didn't have LED bulbs aboard German submarines in WW II and since most of the exterior footage was shot under 'sunless' conditions, I don't believe HDR would add a lot here.

I'm not sure what LED bulbs have to do with anything.

Just like you don't need lots of additional spatial resolution to get benefits from UHD, you don't need extreme highlight peaks to get benefits from HDR.

And you also have WCG and more efficient compression using higher bandwidth and greater storage capacity.

Dynamic range isn't just about bright burning highlights, it really isn't. Negative film has a very wide dynamic range so even under the conditions for which Das Boot was shot I fully expect that an HDR pass could render out as yet unseen details.

Next year will be Das Boots 40 year anniversary. Perfect time for a 4K release.
