Default Revenge Of The Cheerleaders (1976) coming from Shout Factory

Quote:
They've got spirit, yes they do! They've got spirit, now on Blu!

Take a trip back to the drive-in with the sizzling siss-boom-bah comedy, Revenge Of The Cheerleaders! The cheerleaders of Aloha High are hard-working young women, spending their days and nights raising the spirits of the boys' basketball team. But they'll have to put in some overtime when they uncover a plot by evil real estate developers to take over their beloved school and demolish it.

This varsity farce has got it all: a plethora of pom-poms, drug-laden lunches, locker room antics, a trip to the Cabazon Dinosaur Museum, and a young David Hasselhoff as "Boner." Top that, Scorsese!

Bonus Features for Blu-ray
  • Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio Mono
  • Audio Commentary With Writer/Producer/Director Richard Lerner And Writer/Producer/Director Of Photography Nathaniel Dorsky
  • Trailer
  • Radio Spot

There's no mention of a new transfer which is disappointing. I had been hoping a boutique label would re-release the Cheerleaders movies and give them new transfers. The Shout Factory website lists the aspect ratio as 1.66:1 so maybe Shout Factory did a new transfer and just forgot to mention it

This movie is bonkers. David Hasselhoff gives a career-defining performance that was sadly overlooked by the Academy. But you don't have to take my word for it. My favorite sleaze blog, Video Zeta One, gives it a rare 10/10 rating:

Well, folks, we've got ourselves another tenner. I thought about this - and there's literally nothing at all I would change - it is just perfect as is. If you don't have a good time watching this movie, you need to maybe step back and take a look at how life has harmed you.

I have the disc. It is on a BD25. I haven't compared directly to the code red disc (need to find it), but the aspect and quality seems similar to the code red 1.55:1 version.

The Code Red version offered two presentations (1.78:1 and 1.55:1), but I am not sure if the disc was BD50 or BD25, will have to find and confirm. If CR one had both aspect ratios crammed on a BD25 there is a chance the Shout might have better encode.

So I matched up a frame, its DEFINITELY the same transfer as the 1.55:1 version on the code red release:

https://www.mondo-digital.com/revengecheerff.jpg

This looks nearly identical to the Shout blu-ray, including the damage lines, color, level of detail, and all

IN terms of extras, it has the same commentary from the code red blu-ray, plus a trailer and a radio spot.

1.55:1 aspect ratio?!? I haven’t seen that since my old Sony DVD of Hal Hartley’s Amateur!

As a fan of ‘70s exploitation flicks, I’ve had a soft spot for the Cheerleaders trilogy. Arrow has released the second film, Swinging Cheerleaders, so I hope Shout! will also release the first one.

Thank you for taking one for the team. So it seems the entire release is recycled: the same transfer as the Code Red blu-ray and the extras are from the Code Red blu-ray and Anchor Bay DVD. I wonder why they even bothered? I don't think they will get many people to buy it because of the premium price and nothing new being brought to the table. It's strange Shout Factory would release a movie they couldn't or wouldn't do a new transfer for instead of releasing a movie from the Corman or Westchester libraries they own with a new transfer.

You probably already know it but Code Red also released the first one on blu-ray:

If you're a fan at all of 70's / 80's sex comedies, Revenge of the Cheerleaders is a must-own, no matter which release you purchase. Can't miss with this one.

I'm glad it's available again for those who missed out on Bill's Code Red disc.

ALRIGHT so i found my code red disc. Here is the main difference:

The Code Red disc is a BD25. It allocates about 12GB to the 1.55:1 version, and 12GB to the 1.78:1 version.

The Shout disc is a BD25. It allocates 25GB to the 1.55:1 version. It does not have the 1.78:1 version.

Both have lossless audio.

So the encode is much higher bitrate on Shout, but it drops the 1.78:1 version. The color on that 1.78:1 version is pretty terrible though and I don't think I'd watch it because of that.

Does the extra bitrate on the Shout help? In motion, not really, because the source that both discs used is in pretty terrible shape with mush for grain on both discs - there is minimal high frequency info in the source where the extra bitrate on the Shout could have helped.

But, if you pause it, the Shout disc does have substantially less compression artifacts than the code red, just hard to notice in motion because they blend well with the mush grain.

So bottom line-

Shout disc- double the bitrate of same 1.55:1 code red transfer; drops the subpar 1.78:1 version; retains code red commentary; adds trailer and radio spot not on CR version; technically the best looking due to less compression artifacts, even though the source is still really beat up

Code Red disc - extra 1.78:1 version of movie with poor color, a bit worse PQ on the 1.55:1 than shout disc; doesn't have the trailer or radio spot of the shout disc, but does have the commentary

So I'd say the Shout wins by a nose, assuming you dont care about the 1.78:1 version (though I doubt anyone will)

Here are two screens to compare. The Shout release looks better. Lengths are exact, this is the same frame from both files. *Note the Code Red* is cropped from how I took the screen.

Shout Studios and Frames has plums of steel charging $30 for this. It will reach blow out pricing like a few other exclusives eventually.

Glad to see the write ups on the Shout vs CR. I’ve had the CR for a long time and was debating picking this release up. Given the underlying source issues, I’ll likely stick with the code red. I wish they would just release these Corman titles as normal releases or at least make them double features with 2 discs if they are going to charge $30 a pop for them.

As a side note, everyone needs a copy of Stripped to Kill and Dance with Death, so I was glad to see those come as double features. Too bad they weren’t together on the same one.

FYI - If you want the OG Code Red disc, now's the time.... in stock at Grindhouse Video for $22.99.

https://grindhousevideo.com/products...eaders-blu-ray

HIGHLY recommended...besides, the OG pressing is the one to own

I don't think Corman had anything to do with the Cheerleaders movies.

I own both and the Shout is just slightly better all things considered, given technical improvement (though barely detectable) and an additional useful extra or two. At this rate, other than CR nostalgia, there is no reason to own the CR release anymore. CR does got that extra transfer but its basically worthless because of even worse quality than the main one. If you already own the CR the Shout isnt worth upgrading to though.

Grabbed this during the Shout sale in November when it was $11.99, which is a decent price. Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith being obviously pregnant is funny.
