‘Evil Dead’: Sébastien Vaniček Directing an Official Spinoff Movie

Quote:
In the wake of last year’s box office hit Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment in the Sam Raimi-created film franchise, another brand new Evil Dead movie is on the way soon!

Deadline reports today that Sébastien Vaniček has been hired by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures to direct an untitled Evil Dead spinoff movie.

“Details as to the film’s plot are under wraps,” Deadline notes.

Sébastien Vaniček made his feature debut with Infested (Vermines) just last year, and it’s clear that Raimi and company saw serious Evil Dead potential in the filmmaker. The new course for the Evil Dead franchise is for Raimi to hand select hot up-and-coming filmmakers to put their own spin on the Deadites, which has been working exceedingly well for the bloody saga.

Bring it on. I have yet to see an Evil Dead film I didn't like.

Can't wait. On the recording in Evil Dead Rise it says that there are three known Books Of The Dead so they make another after this and tie them all together. Plus the book from EDR would still be in the apartment.

I also hope they keep skipping the over top humor of the Bruce Campbell films for these. Campell is the only one who could pull it off so don't try.

Did not particularly care for EDR. I would have preferred a sequel to the 2013 film despite its flaws, I liked Ash.

Still, any Evil Dead news is good news! They seem to be going for stand alone films now. That will only last so long. The series imo, needs a protagonist to replace Bruce if he won't do another. I'd prefer that to be 2013's Ash.

If Bruce Campbell was headlining a return to the Ash character, we wouldn't hear a pin drops worth of b*tching.

Eh?

In what world was it 'barely' an Evil Dead film?

Isolated environment, evil book, voice on an evil tape deck, demon possession, murderous family members, self-mutilation, chainsaw, shotgun, an elevator filled with blood, creature effects work, the eyeball popping gag again, half the crew of the Ash vs Evil Dead TV series working on it and Bruce Campbell screaming about the Book of the Dead. What more would you want?

You just described any number of random possession films. There was none of the humor or zany stylings of Raimi present in the film. The 2013 worked for me, by and large, because at least it was lean and maintained the demented mean spirit of the original film. Ash vs. Evil Dead was AoD on roids. It was fun, but outstayed its welcome. EDR just felt like a possession movie, Evil Dead in name only.

Man, I loved Evil Dead Rises, one of my favorite movie of 2023 and my third favorite Evil Dead movie (after 2 and Army, of course). I've always enjoyed apartment building settings for horror movies (Demons 2 being a prime example) and thought it worked really well in this one.
I'm totally down for more Evil dead by younger directors. I love Bruce Campbell as Ash but honestly didn't care for Ash vs The Evil Dead. I'd still love a proper Evil dead 4 (or Army of darkness 2?) but at this point, I dout it will ever happen.

New ‘Evil Dead’ Filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček Teases His Vision: “A Nasty Film… a Film That Hurts”

Quote:
The Evil Dead franchise will return with a brand new untitled spinoff movie, we learned earlier this week, and French filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček (Infested) is on board to direct.

We don’t know much of anything about this sixth installment in the Evil Dead film franchise at this time, but the website Konbini did manage to get some quotes from Vaniček.

For starters, it sounds like his take on The Evil Dead will be an experience in grueling terror, which has become a guarantee from the film franchise dating back to the beginning. The 2013 remake and last year’s Evil Dead Rise, in particular, have doubled down on this approach.

“I told the studio that I wanted to make a nasty film, a film that hurts, from which you come away tested,” Vaniček tells the outlet, suggesting he’s the right man for the job. “I’m going to put all the horror I have inside, it will be cathartic, and if I haven’t ruined my career and I can continue to make films behind it, I will move on to something other than horror!”

When can you expect this next installment in the bloody saga?

Vaniček notes in the same interview, “If all goes well, we could start filming at the end of 2024-beginning of 2025, for a release that I hope for Halloween 2025.”

He also mentions that Sam Raimi and company are giving him “100% creative freedom” to play in the Evil Dead sandbox, and that he aims for his film to have a “French twist.”

One thing I'll say these spin off films need more of? More personality in the lead hero. The Evil Dead demons thankfully make up for it, but when they're more interesting to watch than the lead hero, that's not great. It doesn't have to be comedy style, just a lot more energy or something in the lead. I don't want to see a normal, average personality and then they become tough.

Have a crazy personality lead character and then they get even crazier when battling the Evil Dead.

Back when I was a kid and saw Army of Darkness in theaters, I wasn't familiar with the franchise yet, and thought Bruce was actually Jim Carrey for awhile into the film, not spotting the credits. But Jim Carrey could pull it off.
I always thought Jason Lee (from the Dream Catcher movie) would be a good double for Bruce Campbell too in his younger days. He looks similar to Bruce. That's only if Bruce decided to retire the character permanently, as he is the King of the Evil Dead series.

Campbell was a just normal guy in the original. He didn't become "crazy" until Dead by Dawn.

Every movie these days is a sequel/prequel/reboot/remake or based on a book/play/TV show. The Evil Dead was great, but it's great that it was. Let it go.

I sound like a bitter old man, and I have no regrets.

I agree with the person that said the newer films are lacking a charismatic lead like Bruce, but I still have enjoyed every ED film out there (need to watch the show).

Consider me excited for this one.

Interesting they managed to make this many films without Campbell. It just feels empty without him, I feel the same way about Mad Max, I normally don't even bother checking these movies out for that reason I'd rather rewatch the old ones.
