Blu-Ray Blues: Sony Group Corp. News Hit to Physical Media Releases

Sony is a problem.

They're as shortsighted and stupid as Netflix apparently.

I just came across this article about it, and am not happy.

Do you live in Japan?

Do you live in Japan and use recordable DVDs and/or BDs?

If you answer no to both questions, then the news is irrelevant to you. It also does not affect Japanese commercial media.

Read the article that the one you posted linked to, it specifies recordable media. Not commercially produced discs.

You are right in that the news item in question appeared to be limited in scope, but what guarantee do we have that Sony won't make another announcement in 6 months or a year, cutting back production even further?

Like many others who are physical media collectors, I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

I hope physical media will continue to be around for as long as I live, but I also want to be prepared in case it doesn't.

That's Phase 2. Why do you think all three articles (not including the blog post link) repeatedly cited streaming as a reason? And they all point to the company's desire to stop producing optical Blu-ray discs. Not recordable Blu-ray discs.

I'm afraid this is moving in one direction only, and it's not ours.
