This does not make sense. They just announced a partnership with Disney to make their discs.

I saw some people on Twitter saying that they're just outsourcing. I really hope so. My heart can't take news like this every few months.

Maybe it just means that Sony will no longer make blank BD-R discs for consumer use, such as these:

Sony's US discs are pressed in Mexico, so this is likely just affecting that region? For now, at least?

It's not affecting the US, so we're safe:

Think eventually it will just be the smaller boutique labels offering physical media to the remaining people who still buy discs, thankfully many of them do a better job than the big studios, but it is sad to see this happening, as Sony still make fantastic Blu-ray / 4k UHD discs.

Edit - Ok so it seems to be about BD-R discs for now......

I thought Blu-ray was still huge in Japan. It's weird to pull out completely unless there's another company that's handling it.

This has nothing to do with commercially pressed Blu-ray Discs. Everyone calm down.

Yet another story that confuses recordable discs with pressed ROM discs.

It’s not a good thing obviously, but it doesn’t have any meaning for prerecorded media. Optical media doesn't have a lot of relevance these days as a home recording format. I'm willing to bet most users of this forum haven't burned a disc at home in a while, but are buying pre-recorded movies.

More confusion for people.

Sony JAPAN is cutting BD-R, CD-R, DVD-R, etc.

The article also suggests gradually phasing out Blu-ray but with no real indication of sources.

Sony just announced a partnership with Disney to produce more Blu-ray/4K discs. I wouldn't be so doom-and-gloom over it just yet.

Yup, this is about recordable media storage, not physical media itself. And it makes sense, like who even buys blank discs these days.

Well, I do. I don't want to side track the discussion, especially since I mostly lurk here, but I use blank discs quite a bit for video production purposes...selling completed videos on BD-R, archiving raw footage, etc. There are many disc duplication services that would buy and use blank discs as well. Replication plants won't do small runs of very, very niche discs that might only sell 200 copies.

Obviously, if that's part of your job or a hobby, but I was referring in general to your average person.
