Shout! Factory will be releasing Oliver Stone's JFK (1991) on 4K UHD in December! This will be part of their Shout Select series. Extras are in progress.

Update (12/13/24): This Collector's Edition release will be going out of print. It will eventually be replaced by a release with just the Dirctor's Cut on 4K and BD. If you want the theatrical cut, and other extas on the 4th BD, best to buy this current release ASAP.

[Show spoiler]Yesterday, IndieWire published their Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast with Oliver Stone, which was recorded at the American Cinematheque after a screening of JFK on August 26th. Towards the end, Stone himself confirms a 4K release is coming. He comes off rather erratic (no surprise there), but you can hear it at around 22:30 into the recording.

A member on reddit who was at the screening also said "I also spoke to somebody in the audience who claimed to be assisting with the remaster, but he declined to elaborate any further details". I can also separately corroborate this with what appears to be a Bullmoose placeholder page for the release. The 4K would seemingly be coming from Warner, but it's remotely possible they may have licensed it to Shout! Factory, given that they also released Natural Born Killers, and a JFK Revisited documentary from Stone (also Platoon). Additionally, the Academy Museum will be showing the theatrical cut later this month.

I'm voting. I think Platoon is a mess largely because it was an old master that someone tried to 'fix'. I don't believe new scans of his movies (like The Doors) will be an issue. Natural Born Killers (new scan) will be out in a few weeks and will be more telling.

Yeah this is the main reason Platoon was bad. The MGM Blu-ray had a shitstorm of noise (read: not film grain) layered on top of grain, so they tried to fix that for the UHD. But it seemed a real low budget affair, not only because they didnt do a fresh scan and used a really poor BD transfer, but also because they used a constant DNR setting instead of varying it by scene, which would have avoided the overuse of DNR in the few scenes that had light noise in the old transfer.

It should include the Theatrical cut, DC, whatever new wacky cuts Stone has been working on, and both versions of JFK Revisited. Maybe even throw in locks of David Ferries eyebrows and grass from the knoll itself for the Ultimate Collectors Set

This is a day one for sure. I'm itching to rewatch this recently after seeing Oppenheimer and how much Nolan aped Stone's style
