Lean on Me (1989) Blu-ray (Warner Archive Collection)

Warner Archive Collection has just announced a long-awaited Blu-ray release of Lean on Me (1989)! Release date is tentatively set for May 27th. I remember this used to be on TV quite often when I was younger, and I really enjoyed watching it. The new release will be sourced from a brand new 4K scan from the Original Camera Negative.

Hands down my favorite Morgan Freeman performance. Force of nature acting. Hard to believe the same man was also in Driving Miss Daisy and Glory all in the same year. When you look up the word “range” in the dictionary, it should just say: Morgan Freeman 1989.

All movies on Blu-ray are in widescreen if they were shot that way. This movie was shot at 1.85:1 which means it will fill your widescreen TV. There will not be black bars on top and bottom. That is only for movies shot 2.35:1 or similar.

This is not correct. Black bars can, and do show up on widescreen displays with a 1.85:1 ratio. I'll use WAC's release of Stand And Deliver as an example, since I pair it, and Lean on Me together in my mind.

I hugely agree. I'm waiting on some of those 90s New Line classics like the House Party trilogy, The Players Club and Above the Rim

I confused this film with Men Don’t Leave, an excellent tearjerker I watched many years ago. That one needs a Blu-ray

I know that, but since those black bars are like 2 millimeters tall on a TV I figured it would be more clear to just bypass that point for the guy asking the question. He clearly has the traditional widescreen big black bars on 2.35:1 in mind, which Lean On Me won’t have. To truly fill a screen, it would need to be 1.78:1. (Avatar does this)

Yes yes yes I agree Above The Rim, South Central, Against the Wall, a Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Class Act and a number of others deserve Blu-Ray releases immediately. It seems George has some big big plans to release more of these titles this year, which is awesome.
