Default Fantastic Voyage Remake

The 'Crimson Peak' filmmaker may be going small in a really big way.

With Pacific Rim 2 shelved, Guillermo del Toro is actively seeking his next project and could follow up his Gothic romance Crimson Peak by going small in a really big way.

Del Toro is in talks to develop and direct Fantastic Voyage, the remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic which is being made by Twentieth Century Fox and Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment.

The project not only reunites del Toro with Cameron, with whom he once tried to launch his passion project At the Mountains of Madness, but reteams him with David Goyer, the writer of his vampire action movie, Blade 2. Goyer wrote the treatment and script for the new Voyage. The two will continue to work on the development of the script.

Voyage revolves around a team of scientists who are shrunk to atomic size and sent in a miniature submarine inside the body of a scientist to save his life. The original movie was set during the Cold War, and the scientist was a defector who was in a coma after an assassination attempt.

The new movie is aimed at being an event-sized tentpole for the studio, which has not dated the project.

Cameron, Jon Landau, and Rae Sanchini are producing through their Lightstorm banner. Goyer will also executive produce.

Matt Reilly is overseeing for Fox.

Del Toro was to have followed up Crimson Peak with Pacific Rim 2, a sequel to his Legendary Pictures mechas-versus-monsters 2013 pic. However, that project was taken off of the release schedule, initially for more development. But sources now say Rim 2 is off the table indefinitely, leaving del Toro wide open to choose his next project

Too bad for Pacific Rim 2. I would like to see him get to remake this.

Hm, it makes sense for Guillermo to go studio, but I much prefer seeing him tackle his own ideas.

I'm surprised they didn't do the sequel Asimov wrote, read it years ago, remember it being a good read at the time.

This is one remake I've been waiting on for a looooong ass time. Del Toro and Goyer are both VERY hit or miss for me.

I'm excited for the film but I just wish a more consistent Wriiter/Director team were involved. James Cameron should direct it himself but he's too busy faffing around with the Avatar world and it's eighty sequels

Aw, no...I was glad to hear some time ago that Cameron had dumped this remake - if they want a 'shrinking' movie why not do Michael Crichton's "Micro" instead? And Del Toro just keeps putting off "At the Mountains of Madness" with every new distraction that comes his way....

Sounds perfect for Del Toro, and probably a movie that could be remade well at this point. I'm open to the idea.

Guillermo del Toro’s Fantastic Voyage Remake to Film Next Fall
By Max Evry on August 25, 2017

Guillermo del Toro’s Fantastic Voyage remake to film next fall

It was over a year and a half ago that fan-fav director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim) signed on to direct 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment’s long-gestating Fantastic Voyage remake. Now, Deadline is reporting that it will be del Toro’s next project after he completes work and promotion on his December 8 Fox Searchlight release, The Shape of Water. The original plan was to start production next spring for a holiday 2019 release, but with his Shape of Water commitments and potential award season activity, Fantastic Voyage will now restart its lengthy prep period in spring 2018 to begin production by fall 2018 at the latest, pushing the release to 2020.

Set to make use of the same 3D technology Cameron used for Avatar, Fantastic Voyage is about a scientist who is dying of a blood clot. His only chance for survival is for five scientist colleagues to be miniaturized in a ship called the Proteus, and injected into his bloodstream. The film is a remake of the 1966 original, directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasence.

The project would unite del Toro with his longtime friend James Cameron, and screenwriter David Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel) who penned Blade II. Cameron, Jon Landau, and Rae Sanchini are producing with Goyer in line to executive produce.

A Fantastic Voyage remake has been in the depths of development hell for many years with a revolving door of potential directors (Roland Emmerich, Paul Greengrass, Shawn Levy), stars (Will Smith, Hugh Jackman) and screenwriters (Shane Salerno, Laeta Kalogridis, Marianne & Cormac Wibberley). Although not an official Fantastic Voyage remake, Joe Dante’s 1987 film Innerspace took a page or twelve from the original Fantastic Voyage in depicting a similar miniature trip through the human body.

I never believe a Tel Toro project is actually happening until I see the first photos from the actual set.

Not the least bit excited for this.

At least it might motivate me to track down the 1966 classic.

Haven't all the park films been dead for a while now? Coulda sworn they shelved them after the live action fairy tales took off.

After Innerspace there's no way to take this concept seriously.
