Default Widescreen BDs

Do all the blu's that are letterboxed have small bars like some dvd's or are they big ones like others. i cant really think of any dvds to use as an example right now but some have smaller letterboxes than others. so i was wondering if anyone had any pics online that i can see because i am getting a 32 inch hdtv soon and i dont want a lot of the screen to be taken up by the letterbox

I think it all depends on how the movie was filmed. Spiderman will fill the screen, but Spiderman 2 and 3 have the letterboxing.

If you don't like the bars you should look for movies with a 1.85:1 or a 1.78:1 aspect ratio.

Why does everyone think this whole aspect ratio is a new concept? Widescreen dvd's have been this way since day one.

Neither do they bother me, but I do have a brother who refuses to watch a widescreen version of any movie because of them.

im NOT complaining about the letterbox. i buy every dvd in widescreen. but some have smaller bars than others and i like the smaller ones. and i know that some blus are full screen and some are not, i just wanted to know if the ones thare are letterboxed have full bars or medium sized bars

It depends on the movie and what aspect ratio they're filmed in. All of your questions and more are answered in the thread I linked.

I only ever bought WS versions of movies on DVD. On old 4:3 TV's, the bars are even larger.

To me, the most important thing is to see the vision the film maker intended his/her audience to see. Anything, like P&S or zooming in on an image, negates that.

I prefer when people refer to it as Original Aspect Ratio as opposed to Widescreen.

Widescreen Films 1:78:1 1:85:1 or 2:35:1: Casino Royale, The Rock, Top Gun practically any film since the 50's

Full Frame 1:33:1: Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood

both aspect ratios show the entire frame the way the director intended it
