But Morgan's swashbuckling uncle, Dawg Brown (Frank Langella), wants the treasure for himself, and does battle with his headstrong niece and her unwilling accomplice, Latin-speaking physician William Shaw (Matthew Modine).

I recently bought the UK SteelBook, and I honestly like the artwork (with the embossed title) on that one a lot more:

I hate those clear Slipcovers that Lionsgate uses on these, it seems like they are often crimped on the back covers with some copies.

I'm sure since it displays "StudioCanal" on the back cover of this, it will just be the same troubled 4K restoration with the questionable color grading. The audio tracks/subtitles + the bonus features also look to be identical.

I prefer the UK artwork as well. The slips on the Lionsgate releases can crack and break off at the ends which is annoying.

I am so glad this is finally getting a 4K upgrade in the US. It's one of the best pirate films in my opinion and doesn't deserve the hate it got upon release. Every single POTC film copied it in one way or another and that says something.

In terms of the steelbook art I think it's great. If you've never seen the film it may be lost on you but the bandana being on the slip and the map being under it is a nod to
[Show spoiler]the piece of the map being tattooed on one of the characters heads in the film which I think is a fantastic touch!

I'm not one to whine about color correction usually, but this is going to get the typical piss yellow Hiventi grade as the Studiocanal version, right?

Not sure of what to make of these Lionsgate "exclusive" 4K releases going to Walmart now. Pretty sure there are still more than a few of those Best Buy exclusives that still have yet to see a "non-exclusive" 4K release anywhere else. Dirty Dancing took less than a year and a half for the 4K standard release to be made available, but The Hurt Locker is just a couple weeks away from its 2 year release anniversary with no wide release seemingly in sight. Wonder what the exclusivity window is for Walmart...

Thankfully, Cutthroat Island isn't exactly a "classic" at the same level at the former two mentioned titles, but even still, I hate seeing 4K titles locked away in limited runs, at generally higher prices, with wide releases coming who knows when.

I wonder if it will be a remastered BD or the old one? Already picked up the UK edition, and the art is better. A remastered BD in Region A will get me to bite.

Will this be another case where the only 4K release it gets is a Walmart steelbook exclusive without a regular slip edition like Silent Night? Kind of annoying.

Perhaps resident custom cover artist John Carpenter will grace us with that key art for a custom cover UHD!

Well you have to remember that film critics think every movie has to be high art whereas normies like us just want to be entertained.

I never saw this when it came out but I like Gina Davis so I'm gonna watch it this weekend to decide if I want the 4K.

If it’s better than the UK release, I’ll gladly buy it and swap the disc into the superior UK steelbook. I purposely bought the UK steelbook if this situation arose. I knew the U.S. release would never beat that steelbook.

30 years ago I could get into this one. Bought it on blue a while back and I couldn't believe how much I hated it. Must have been in an altered mood way back when.

Hands up who saw this at the cinema/ theatres? I know i did, i love it back then and i still do.

The new extras are really good btw, i was surprised at how great they were. Matthew Modine's short pirate film is really good, but completely different in tone and style to Cutthroat Island.

I don’t think I’ve seen this since I rented it back in the mid 90s. I honestly don’t remember what I thought about it. I remember it being a notorious bomb, but that doesn’t always mean the movie is terrible. Maybe people just didn’t want to see a pirate adventure movie at the time. I dunno, I don’t feel it’d be safe to just blind buy this for nostalgia, but I definitely should rewatch it.
