Garfield as a kick-ass action hero? Odie the dog as a savant?

Doesn't quite match the characters in the comic strip.

Guess you haven't seen the & Friends series or the Film Roman specials if you're complaining about him being too energetic..

every film or tv needs conflict. it makes sense for Garfield to be outside in an adventure. you are right about the 80s tv series and specials.

Speaking of which, I wish the 80's/90's stuff would get a Blu-ray release!

Saw this in theater last night. It was not good. I'd go so far as to say it was one of the worst big screen animated films I've ever seen. Nothing about it really fit with the Garfield Character as Jobla mentioned. I very much enjoyed Garfield and Friends and actually thought during the movie how they should have more heavily pulled from those stories, but this just didn't connect with me.

Thankfully for my wallet/conscience, my Wife, daughter and her friends all enjoyed it and so I could just chalk it up to not being for me. That said, I don't plan on picking up the movie on disc unless it hits like $5. My wife or daughter will have to buy this one if they want to watch it again.

I wanted to see if. But soon as they said Chris Pratt was Garfield I was out. Sameul Jackson didn't help things either. I like Jackson but he is boring to me now as he just phones in his sam Jackson schtick anymore.

I just need to come to grips with the fact that anything I like that originated more than 20 years ago that gets made now I probably won't like it. They take away what originally made it a fan favorite.

The old Garfield will still be remembered 20 years from now, but hardly anyone will even remember this movie in 2 years.

But that's ok, I can still watch Garfield and friends, and the Halloween special.

I'm with you. Honestly, the whole film just felt somewhat lazy to me. I did like the animation style utilized as that provided a fresh update, but from the generic storyline, to the lazy voice acting, none of it felt like Garfield to me. I didn't have huge hopes or expectations for the film, but went in expecting something like the modern Addams family animated films which I thought we ok but unfortunately this just didn't hit thr mark.

I do think that my biggest issue with the film was the voice of Garfield though as you touched on, though turning this movie into a generic heist film with unlikeable and unmemorable characters sits right up there as well. I did really like Odie, John and the veterinarian. But no binky, an unwanted and hokey backstory for Garfield, and a lame vilian storyline made me give this two thumbs down.

Just turn the Halloween adventure into a feature length 85 minute movie and fix Garfield's voice and I guarantee that that film would do great at the theatre.

I'm sure the Blu-ray will still be good, but man I'm still frustrated at missing out on both HDR AND the Atmos audio. I'm sure at least the 4K stream will provide the HDR, but after Anyone But You's Atmos track never showed up on streaming I'm a bit worried. Just wish Sony wasn't allergic to including Atmos on the BD after they went all-in on 4K...

Entirely possible the 4K could be announced later on- I wouldn't rule it out entirely solely based on early listings not including it. Not a Sony title, but I believe similar happened with Warner Bros' Barbie last year.

I was going to see it at the theater, but between the poor reviews and the startalents in the castilian spanish dub, I didn't want to see it. But I still have that hope that it will be a guilty pleasure for me and I will like the movie.

Yes! I love the Bill Murray Garfield movies. And I am forever grateful for them. It came out at the perfect time. Right at the peak of DVD. And because of the Bill Murray Garfield movies, they released the original 80's Garfield TV specials, and the 80's Saturday morning cartoon, Garfield and Friends on DVD. Which, without the movie coming out, they wouldn't have released them on DVD. And because the Bill Murray Garfield movie performed so well at the box office, and particularly on home media, they made a sequel, and continued to release the 80's Garfield on DVD. And actually released the entire series. Which was rare back then. Because it's unlikely that they would've released 80's Garfield on DVD if there was no movie to promote. And if on the off-chance they did, it's even less likely that they would've released the entire catalogue. Back in those days, if they released an 80's show, it would be the first volume, of a few select episodes, or the first season. And then if it didn't sell, nothing else. Assuming they released it at all. There's still to this day, a lot of popular 80's cartoons that don't have proper DVD releases.

As for the Chris Pratt Garfield movie, it was fine. Overall good kids movie. But not a great Garfield movie. You could swap Garfield out with any other character, and get the same exact movie. I also had nothing riding on the Chris Pratt film, like I did with the Bill Murray ones. They already released all the 80's Garfield stuff on DVD 20 years ago. And Garfield is a much more legendary, and accepted IP today being almost 50 years old, than it was 20 years ago.

This is for sale and rent on digital. The digital is in 4K at $24 so for now this is the only way to get the 4k.
