Default Eproductwars closing up shop?

Sounds like another HD DVD fanboy run website is closing up shop.

"The war ends...

Walmart goes with Blu-ray, and as of today (2/18/2008), Toshiba is saying different things to different people (ranging from "we haven't made a decision" to (paraphrasing) "we may give up really really soon." I'd say this is akin to the moment when Rudy Guliani's top strategists saw the writing on the wall and played football (instead of working) shortly before exiting the campaign. I'll leave it to others who spent much more time on this than me to figure out when the tide turned (of if it ever did), but I'm sure the HD-DVD team at this point is looking back at the last few years of their lives and wondering the same thing.

One thing I did learn from managing this site is that a first-mover advantage (as HD-DVD had for a few months) is nice, but it doesn't mean much when no one's watching and no one cares. Back when HD-DVD was winning, far fewer people had HD TVs, and there were very few HD DVDs available. Toshiba was winning all the games in the preseason (with noone watching) while Sony was preparing for the regular season (recruiting their team, working their "relationships" with the umpires, etc). By the time the regular season (covering Q3/Q4 2007) ended, Sony clearly won, and won big.

Another thing I learned is that price isn't everything. HD DVD always had the less expensive players and often the less expensive DVDs. They also had extensive giveaway sales and packaged HD DVDs with regular DVDs. Still Blu-ray won. Why? Because, for these particular decision makers (those with HD DVDs who even considered buying HD DVDs), price wasn't nearly as big of an issue as the answer to the questions of "what movies are available?" and "who will win?". Of course, price reductions would (and did) result in temporary hits to the blu-ray lead, but these answers were the only thing that (I believe) could fuel a sustainable lead.

Notes about the site: I'm going to freeze the "Who's on top" timeline, but I'll let the graphs/stats continue to run, so that Blu champions can relish their victory (who doesn't like to finish a board game they know they're going to win?). In the meantime, please continue to use the following link (we earn money when you do) to

Browse and Buy Blu-ray DVDs"

At least this isn't some kind of crazed fanboy rant and meltdown. This sounds like someone who actually finally got a glimpse of some reality and learned something.

Good. Hope I see more of that to come.

Probably because no format war means less hits for his site. Can you blame him?

Let the revisionist history begin!

Blu was winning in Q1/Q2 2007 too. In fact, Blu went permanently in the lead in mid-December 2006.

HD DVD didn't win in the pre-season. They won some practice games before the pre-season.

It's always nice to find other folks who now agree with most of us on this forum, who knew the right choice quite some time ago.

Default I would say the site was neutral

I've been reading and posting to eProductwars for some time (before last January if I recall correctly) and I wouldn't say the site was red - pretty much neutral. What it did have (in the DVD comments section) were some of the most stubborn, arrogant and ignorant HD-DVD supporters I have seen on any forum. But only a handful, and it also featured a lot of well-versed posters, some who were neutral or supported either format (though more for Blu-Ray than HD-DVD). You'll never be able to tell exactly what went on since older posts (say past a week or so) just fall away, never to be seen again...

I think that the more annoying posters were born of the structure of the site, which was unique - instead of needing to register to post, it was just about the most open forum you have ever seen where you did not need to provide your name or email address or anything to post, and even if you did provide a name the site would not verify you were who you said you were. Combine this open posting with very hands-off moderation (only the most vulgar stuff was ever removed) and you had quite a free-for all, and I think a home for the more virulent HD-DVD supporters they could not have even on a place like AVS forums.

So I'd like to toast the guy who put the site together for making something really unique, even though it will probably fade to obscurity along with HD-DVD. I myself only plan to read and post there until the final Paramount/Universal announcements and then I'll stick around here, as I think these forums look to be generally pretty good going forward.

Oh I seriously hope Mikey keeps up the good fight, nothing makes my day like Mike's ludicrous rants that are completely devoid of fact or reality.

I emailed him several times about the google search graph being inaccurate - he never changed it. That told me he was red leaning.

what is Mike HD going to do??????

I always thought of that site as one of the more neutral ones. It couldn't have been run by red bots and still posted information constantly that showed blu spanking red. The board always leaned blu in my opinion and Tony did nothing to censor anybody, unless it was obscene/
